COLLEGE INFORMATION

1.  Before you start the college selection process, sit down and make a list of what you want in a college.  For example: small teacher-student ratio.  Rank the items on your list in order of importance.  (This list and the rankings may change as you research colleges).

2.  Go to www.cfnc.org and establish an account.  You can find information on everything from identifying your career interests to finding the money to pay for college.  You can also complete a common application that is accepted at most NC colleges.  You can save and access your application at any time.

3.  Every college has a website - do a Google search for the college of your choice and explore the website.  You may want to revise items on your list of what you want in a college as you discover what different colleges offer.

4.  College majors - You may not know what area you want to major in college or you may change your mind once you are in college.  Most colleges do not require you to select a major until after your sophomore year.  When you select a college make sure that the college offers majors in areas that you are interested in studying.  For instance, some who loves the arts should probably not attend a college without a music, theater or art department.

 

5. Community college vs. 4-year college or university - A community college can be an excellent way to start your college career.  Almost all courses earned in an Associate's Degree Program at a NC community college are transferable to a NC 4-year college or university.  Tuition for a full-time student is $800 a semester at a community college vs. $2,500 at a 4-year college or university.
