Mrs. Carter and Ms. Abernethy Welcome to First Grade! Knollwood Elementary We are having an awesome year so far! Your children are all so bright and fun to be around. Thank you for your continued support at home! Mrs. Carter & Ms. Abernethy Daily Class Schedule: 7:45-9:45 Language arts 9:45-10:55 Math 10:55-11:25 Recess 11:40-12:10 Lunch 12:30-1:00 Enhancements 1:00-1:45 Writer's workshop 1:45-2:25 Science/social studies We will continue to use our Promethean board this year to explore technology while learning at the same time! Our students also love using the ActivExpressions to send in their answers for our math quiz bowls! 12 Words- You may have heard your child singing a song about the 12 words. These are words that will help them as the get older and begin testing. It will also help them in our reading groups, and other areas where we may see these 12 words. Please continue to practice the song at home as we go more into detail about what each word means! (trace, analyze, infer, evaluate, formulate, describe, support, explain, summarize, compare, contrast, predict) Current language arts focus: Cause and effect, Reading fluency, summarizing and retelling events in order, graphic organizers, comparing/contrasting, consonant clusters Current math focus: visual spatialization, geometry, problem solving skills (Quiz bowls also), addition and subtraction, tens and fives frames Topics for science/social studies/health: animal habitats Here are a few questions that will help your child as they are writing: Does my story make sense? Did I use correct capitalization, spacing, and punctuation? Did I focus on a "small moment" story? Did I include many details in my writing and illustration? Is my paper readable to others? Did I edit my paper to correct mistakes and add details that I forgot? **REMINDERS** -Please check your child's agenda each night. -Your child's book in a bag will come home each Wednesday. This book will be on their level, so please let them read it to YOU! -When you read a library book, please sign your name and the book's name on the correct day in the green folder. Then, return it to school so your child may get a new book. Only one book is to be checked out at a time. -Please make sure your child completes their homework each night. We will have homework every day except Friday and over holidays. Sometimes this may require your help, and other times they may be able to do it on their own. -Read to your child--they enjoy it, even though they are reading on their own! IMPORTANT DATES: January 18: Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday (no school) January 21: Teacher workday January 22: Teacher workday Our enhancement schedule: Monday- Media and Music Tuesday- P.E. Wednesday- Second Step (with Mrs. Lattimore) Thursday- Art Friday- Computer or guidance *Lunch is from 11:40-12:10.
