Spider Monkeys

Welcome!

For Language Arts you will need: a 3-ring binder, loose leaf paper, and pencils. Any class donations of construction paper, notebook paper, pencils, white computer paper, and kleenex are greatly appreciated! Please check the homework hotline @ 704-857-1852 at ext 2801 for daily team homework updates! I look forward to a fantastic school year!

A sign up sheet is posted in Ms. Nichols classroom for after school help on Thursdays from 3:15-4:15. Parents must send a note and a phone number where I can verify that the child has permission to stay. The 4:30pm bus is provided by CLMS on Thursdays if needed!

At the moment in Language Arts we are working with the reading strategy mnemonic UNRAAVEL and we are dancing and singing the 12 POWERFUL WORDS! Both of these strategies are researced based by Larry Bell and are proven to increase fluency on reading passages and test like questions! Most students can memorize, but not every will learn what the power words are and how they decode them! Ask your child what the words are and see if they know the song and dance!

In AIG Language Arts we are working through the "Utopia" concept based unit. We are currently reading Ray Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains," while using the UNRAAVEL mnemonic to help walk through the correct reading and decoding strategies! Soon, students in AIG will be bringing home a new novel for independent reading at home. There will be an assigned due date for the novel! Look for more details on this shortly, as we are still working through lessons that go before the novel. Parents please monitor independent reading at home and make sure your child is recording summarys in their "daybook" as they independently read novels at home. This will increasingly help raise reading comprehension level and fluency! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via e-mail or call me at 704-857-7946 ext. 413!

There is an updated syllabus for AIG Language Arts coming home soon! Parents please be on the lookout for this, and call me or e-mail me if you have any questions or concerns!

BOOK PROJECT DUE DATES: Please follow the RUBRIC given! If you have any questions or need help, see me before the day the project is due!
