Welcome Seagulls!!!! Throughout February students will be reading and completing activities on biographies, working on Wordskills words in lesson 6, writing a paper on the a person they admire, learning a new set of 12 Powerful words, and continue to UNRAAVEL passages. Information has been sent home explaining the book project that is due March 2. Students should be reading their book and deciding which projects they are going to complete. They have to present one of their projects to the class. We are now into Lesson 6 of our Wordskill words. Students are learning many new words. Students should make flash cards to review these words. Students should study all their words nightly for five to ten minutes. They should study lesson 6 and review lessons 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Students have a Reading Log due every Friday. They should read 100 minutes a week and get a parent signature. As your child reads, ask them about the characters, setting and plot(sequence of events) of the story. We will be going to the library Tuesday, February 2nd and February 11th. Here are a few books you might want to read : Tuck Everlasting Number the Stars The Egypt Game The Giver Helen Keller The Story of My Life The Upstairs Room Bridge To Terabithia Marley A Dog Like No Other The 12 Power Words Trace: Outline Analyze: Bread down into smaller steps or parts Infer: Read between the lines; read what the author doesn't say Evaluate: Judge or determine value Formulate: Build, create Describe: Tell all about it Support: Back it up; defend Explain: Tell; Tell sequence, parts, or details Summarize: The short version; key points or main idea Compare: Things that are similar Contrast: Things that are different Predict: Think about the future New 12 Power Words affect - to change or alter effect - the End result demonstrate - to show how to do something conclude - to come to a final decision calculate - to figure out; to determine; to plan out emphasize - to stress a lot; to make important or stand out classify - to group based on a similarity or common trait interpret - to determine or figure out the meaning of something perspective - viewpoint; usually associated with the narrator of a piece of writing (first person, second person, third person) generalize - to state something that is true for MOST of a whole group; to infer something that applies to most or generally all parts of a group/thing illustrate - to make something clear using pictures, words, or diagrams as examples mention - to discuss or talk about briefly, quickly; to say UNRAAVEL U - Underline the title N- Now make a prediction about the text R - Run through and number the paragraphs A - Are you reading the questions? A - Are the important words circled? V - Venture through the passage(Read it.) E - Eliminate wrong answer choices in the questions. L - Let the questions be answered. Students should use this strategy when they are reading a passage and have questions to answer. It helps them to focus in on important information. Thanks for all you do!!
