GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
This course is designed to expose you to the literary themes that impacted British culture by examining literature from the oral tradition to the present. You will sample works from Britain’s leading poets, dramatists, novelists, and short story writers. You will read and react to literature, employ the standards and conventions of language in speech and writing, research issues, and use enrichment activities to reinforce and extend your knowledge base. All lessons are developed in accordance with the NC Standard Course of Study for English IV.  Additional emphasis will be placed on preparation for the NC Graduation Project.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
You are expected to follow all school rules and policies, with special attention given to the school’s guidelines with regard to tardiness and absence. In addition, have all materials ready to begin class and be seated before the tardy bell rings. No gum, candy, food or drinks are allowed in the classroom. Everyone is expected to respect others and their property. Please utilize the break periods before and after class so as not to disrupt classroom instruction. Above all, actively participate!

GRADE DISTRIBUTION:
Grades will be awarded via a point system, which reflects the level of difficulty and/or research and study time involved. For example, your research paper carries a value of 200 points. If you earn 175 points for this assignment, your grade equivalent is 87.5. Most assignments will hold a point value of between 10 and 100. Semester averages will be figured at 37.5% for each quarter, and 25% for the Final Examination. Seniors may EXEMPT final examinations with an A average and no more than (3) absences, OR with a B average and no more than (2) absences. If the final exam is exempted, each quarter average will count as 50% of your final grade.
