English II
As we get into the 2009-2010 school year I would like to say I am pleased to have your son/daughter in my class this year. English II is a World Literature based course with an emphasis on writing with the North Carolina Writing Assessment in March. Below I have made up a tentative course outline for the semester which may change over the course of the year. Unit One ANCIENT MIDDLE EAST LITERATURE Epic of Gilgamesh Creation Myths Biblical Parables Psalms Unit Two GREEK AND ROMAN LITERATURE Selections from the Iliad Selection from the Aeneid Oedipus Rex Unit Three INDIAN, CHINESE, AND JAPANESE LITERATURE From the Ramayana Analects of Confucius Tanka’s and Haiku’s Unit Four MIDDLE AGES LITERATURE Song of Roland Selections from Dante’s Inferno Nibelungenlied Selection from Don Quixote Selection from Candide Unit Five WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Julius Caesar Unit Six HOLOCAUST Night Unit Seven WRITING Writing will be incorporated throughout for the writing assessment in March Due to a limited number of textbooks, the books themselves will be left in class; however, if your student needs extra help, or needs to make up work during an absence, there is an online textbook that can be utilized. The online textbook has all of the same literature as the one in class but you may also listen to selections read aloud which is helpful. The directions to access the online textbook are as follows: 1. Go to http://my.hrw.com (no "www") 2. Login name will be: username: english68 password: p7p4x 3. Click "go to the online textbook." 4. Find orange tab in top left that reads "Find It." 5. Click on unit number and desired piece of literature. Wewill also do a wordskills lesson every week and be tested on thoseregularly. The attempt of this program is to let students understandthat words are not a bunch of letters thrown together, there aredistinct parts to words and they are put together to have a specificmeaning. Again, I look forward to having your child in class and if there are any questions, please don't hesitate to send me an email. CP English III (NEXT SEMESTER) 1. Go to http://my.hrw.com (no "www") 2.
