SCIENCE

WELCOME TO SCIENCE !
Dear BIG DOGS
Just remember, as 7th graders you are the role models for the 6th graders. Make this your best year ever.
Take care,
Mrs. McNeely

Some important dates to remember:

Feb. 2 2nd Q report cards issued
       24 3rd Q Progress report
Mar. 17 Early release day
       29 End of quarter
Apr. 1 Early release day
       2 Teacher workday
       5-9 Spring break

Dear Parents,
If there is a problem please let me know. I will be glad to help and do what I can to work with you and your child. Please encourage your child to keep up with all assignments both in class and out of class.
When students are absent they know where to find the makeup notebook that has the daily agenda listed. It is their responsibility to get the makeup work.
( Contact numbers at the bottom of my page. )
Thank you ,
Monica McNeely

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN CLASS?

Jan.25 TO Mar. 29

Students are required to complete "comp. words" daily. Students record "Composition Words", define the word and we have a short discussion of the meaning and application of the word. These are terms students will use, not only in 7th grade but will also carry over to 8th grade. I will keep their composition books in class, store them over the summer and return them next year when they enter 8th grade. Each student should start the year with EOG vocabulary.

SCIENTIFIC METHOD:
Followed throughout the year in order to encourage student inquiry and to build a better understanding of subjects studied.

As 7th graders many students have had little experience writing, conducting and analyzing a complete lab experiment. It is my hope that your student will be fully prepared to enter 8th grade with a base understanding of what scientific method means.

Goal 1 Scientific Inquiry
( STUDENTS WILL FOLLOW GOAL 1 THROUGHOUT THE YEAR )

Students will
*Identify and create questions and hypotheses that can be answered through scientific investigations.
*Develop appropriate experimental procedures
*Apply all safety rules
*Analyze variables
*Students will be able to observe, conduct, gather data and interpret findings during investigations of various  topics throughout the year.
*Use oral and written language to communicate findings and defend conclusions
*Analyze and evaluate information from various scientific articles, text and current events

In our science and social studies classes, students are starting research on "Teenage Obesity", in preparation for the 3rd writing assessment.

We continue to work on the human body.We are finishing up the "Digestive System". Projects for that are due ASAP. No later than this week,Fri. Jan. 29
GOAL 4 THE HUMAN BODY
The learner will conduct investigations, uses models , simulations, appropriate technologies, and information systems to build an understanding of the complementary nature of the human body systems.

  LEVELS OF ORGANISMS
* 4..01-4.08 All involve building an understanding of the human body
* 4.04 Evaluate how systems f the human body help regulate the internal environment.
* 4.05 Analyze how an imbalance in homeostasis may result from a disruption in any human organism. Relate disease to biological hazards;viruses, bacteria, parasites and how they may effect the homeostasis of the body systems.
* 4.06 Describe growth and development of the human organisms.

Essential questions:
* How are the systems of the human body interrelated?
* What are the effects of environmental factors on human development?
* To what extent are living systems organized into cellular levels?

Goal 5 Build an understanding of "Heredity and Genetics"
* 5.01 Genes are units of information
          Parents transmit genes
Some medical conditions and diseases are genetic.
* 5.02-5.03 Reproductive System: Dominate -vs- Recessive traits.
Essential questions:
* How are traits passed on from one generation to another?
* How does gene sorting and recombination produce unique characteristics in offspring?
*What is the role of each parent in the transfer of genetic traits?
