Welcome to 5th Grade and to this information webpage. On this page you will find info on fifth grade curriculum, important dates, current events, school related topics, and special occcasions. Please note that this page is updated regularly and is a great resource to your child's academic career.

Technology Has Arrived In Our Classroom!!

We have been very busy using our new Promethean Active Board. This is an interactive computer board that allows students to use technology interactively while lessons are taught. We are having so much fun as we learn!! Yippee!



General Topics:


Newsletters - Newsletters will be sent home periodically. Important news/events and curriculum information will be included so please take time to read the newsletter when sent.

PTA - Please join the PTA - do it for you, your child, and your school.
Please visit the PTA link in order to stay up-to-date on important PTA topics!


How can you help your child improve their reading skills at home?
  • Make sure that they read at least 25 minutes each night.
  • Question them on what they read, this will help with comprehension.
  • Have them read a variety of things, this will help prepare them for the EOG.
Routinely Used Program:
Accelerated Reader (AR) - students are reading books on their assigned reading levels and takes quizzes on those books they have read. A quarterly reward will be given to those who read to their goal. As always students will receive an individualized reading level and goal each quarter.  Please keep track of your child's progress by reading the reports that are sent home.

Please ask to see and sign your child's agenda each night!!
Don't forget to sign your child's reading log on Thursdays.

Curriculum Info:

Reading Story and Vocabulary:
November 2 - No story
vocabulary: We will be working on the 12 powerful words this week.  Also students will review "Main Idea" and learn a new reading strategy called "Unraavel".

Spelling: 
November 2- No words this week:)

Writing: 
We are going to begin Expository writing this month.  Students will learn to map using the "Burger" map.  

Social Studies: 
November 2 - Introduction: Early Ways of Life in North America
We are starting our Native American Impact Project.  Students have been partnered with another student and assigned a tribe that they will do research on.  They will then put together a presentation for a grade.  Ask them about their project and what they are doing.... they are excited:)

Ways to Help Your Child:
  • Make sure he/she has a quiet place to study and work on homework.
  • Set a time for your child to work on homework.
  • Read with your child.
  • Ask your child about his/her day.
  • Review the work in your child's Thursday Folder.
  • Talk positively about school with your child.
  • Communicate with your child's teacher!

A = 93 - 100
B = 85 - 92
C = 77 - 84

~Homework Information~
Students write their homework in their agenda daily, which are to be signed by a parent each night. **Homework assignments will vary.

Reading:
Students will be expected to read 25 min. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. They are to complete their reading log each night and have it signed on Thursday by a parent. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Spelling:
We have started a new spelling contract for spelling homework.  Students will be given spelling words on Monday and will need to complete 3 activities from the contract.  All 3 assignments are due on Thursday.  They may turn in the assignments on Friday, however 10 points will be taken away for late assignments.

Journal:
Students will have a journal entry every Tuesday and Thursday.

Keep your body and belongings to yourself.
