I promise no more snow dances this year:)  Welcome to 5th Grade and to this information webpage. On this page you will find info on fifth grade curriculum, important dates, current events, school related topics, and special occcasions. Please note that this page is updated regularly and is a great resource to your child's academic career. This will be a year of rapid academic growth. Please continue to be involved in your child's school work in as many positive ways as possible. I promise to do my best in preparing your child for his/her future. What's Happening? 12 Powerful Words All students at Bostian will be polishing their test taking strategies using Larry Bell's 12 Powerful Words. The words are trace, analyze, infer, evaluate, formulate, describe, support, explain, summarize, compare, contrast, and predict. All fifth grade students are expected to say, spell, know the definition, give a sentence and a question with each word. Good googa mooga:) Technology Has Arrived In Our Classroom!! We have been very busy using our new Promethean Active Board. This is an interactive computer board that allows students to use technology interactively while lessons are taught. We are having so much fun as we learn!! Yippee!  General Topics: Newsletters - Newsletters will be sent home periodically. Important news/events and curriculum information will be included so please take time to read the newsletter when sent. PTA - Please join the PTA - do it for you, your child, and your school. Please visit the PTA link in order to stay up-to-date on important PTA topics!
Routinely Used Program: Accelerated Reader (AR) - students are reading books on their assigned reading levels and takes quizzes on those books they have read. A quarterly reward will be given to those who read to their goal. As always students will receive an individualized reading level and goal each quarter. Please keep track of your child's progress by reading the reports that are sent home.   Curriculum Info:  Reading Story and Vocabulary: February 8 - Mom's Best Friend Vocabulary: attachment, braille, dog guide, instinct, layout, mastered, mature, memorizing, obedience, obstacles Spelling: February 8: poem, idea, create, diary, area, giant, usual, radio, cruel, quiet, science, rodeo, trial, ruin, lion, actual, actual, riot, fuel, liar, diet Challenge words: appreciate, variety, enthusiastic, realize, eventually Writing: We are working on Expository writing. Students will map using the "Burger" ask them about it:) Social Studies: February 8 The Colonies Unite Vocabulary: backcountry, representation, protest, boycott, Minutemen, revolution ~February Birthdays~ "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you....." ~Grading Scale~ A = 93 - 100 B = 85 - 92 C = 77 - 84 -----At risk of non promotion----- D = 70 - 76 E = Below 70 ~Homework Information~ Students write their homework in their agenda daily, which are to be signed by a parent each night. **Homework assignments will vary. Reading: Students will be expected to read 25 min. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. They are to complete their reading log each night and have it signed on Thursday by a parent. Reading logs are due on Friday. Spelling: We have started a new spelling contract for spelling homework. Students will be given spelling words on Monday and will need to complete 3 activities from the contract. All 3 assignments are due on Thursday. They may turn in the assignments on Friday, however 10 points will be taken away for late assignments. Journal: Students will have a journal entry every Tuesday and Thursday.
