Mrs. Still's 1st Grade

First grade news!   Since we are partners in educating your child, communication is very important.  Please feel free to contact me by writing in the agenda or email me if you ever have a question or just want to share an idea.  I am open to your suggestions!

Creating a positive learning environment is an important aspect of my classroom.  My objective is to encourage students to make appropriate choices while maintaining a controlled classroom.

Homework
Homework is intended to provide independent practice of the skills taught in class.  All homework, along with the signed agenda, is due by Friday of the same week.   If special circumstances arise, please let me know by note or phone call.
Students should read 15-20 minutes nightly.

Language Arts/Writing: Please make sure that you study the spelling words with your child.  The spelling words are also the high frequency words.  Students need to be able to read and spell the third set of the 25 sight words.   These are also used as their spelling words each week so make sure you study with your child.

Math: Students have been working with manipulatives.   The manipulatives provide a hands-on learning experience for the children and make learning fun! Continue to practice math facts at home to develop fluency.  Geometry and measurement ideas are everywhere!

Social Studies: The new month is here.  We will be studying African Americans (women/men who impacted our society; inventors; artist;and many others).

Science:  We will be studying rocks and how they affect the earth's surface.  Weather changes that occur during the changing seasons.

Continue to read every night, study high frequency words, and math facts.

A snack schedule has been sent home.  If you are not able to send a snack on the assigned day, please let me know.  Also, if your child is sick, do not send them to school.  We do not want to put other students at risk.

Make sure you review classroom rules with your child.  We respect ourselves, respect others, respect learning, and respect property.  Remind them of the importance of following rules at school

Read many books children.  Parents please sign/initial the reading log nightly. Prizes will be given to students for reading consistently.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to have a positive effect on you child's life.  I will strive continuously to help each child succeed.
Mrs. Still
