Welcome!

We are working hard to learn the numerous third grade academic skills and concepts. In addition, we are developing our personal and social skills:
setting and achieving personal goals; decision-making; organization and time-management; conflict resolution (getting along with others) and problem-solving.

Reading:
  • We are reading a variety of material.
  • We are working on the following skills: vocabulary in context and decoding words, story elements, prefixes and suffixes, predicting outcomes and drawing conclusions, making inferences, main ideas and details, author's viewpoint, character's feelings and actions, cause and effect, summarizing, reading different kinds of books independently.

Writing:

  • We are working on recognizing spelling patterns in words, and spelling basic sight words correctly in complete sentences.
  • We are using the Lucy Calkins Writing Workshop model to develop strategies for writing personal and imaginative narratives.

Math:
  • We will continue to build on basic addition, subtraction (properties) and problem-solving (including 2-step problems and money values); master multiplication and division concepts and facts.
  • We will soon be studying customary (U.S.) and metric measurement (length, capacity, weight).

Social Studies:
  • We are studying the various aspects of community life (relationships between people and geography; responsibilities of good citizens; roles of people in communities).

Science:
  • We are investigating soil properties and how soil supports plant growth.

Technology:
  • We have begun using technology for: practice and assessment of skills; gathering information; word processing.
  • We will also be involved in Internet research, creating different graphs, and creating a spreadsheet.

Please read and discuss stories with your child every day.
Also, practice math facts and review homework skills.
