Writing Notes & News

There are so many great writing ideas around us. In second grade, we focus on "small moments". This means taking a small moment in life, a personal event, and writing a detailed, focused story about this moment. I personally believe that the best way for students to develop stories to help them first of all build memories and secondly, be able to tell about it before writing it. In class, students get with a partner and practice telling a story before writing it. They use their hand, and tell the story across their fingers. The thumb is the beginning, the pointer finger is the first event with details, the next finger is the second event with details, the ring finger is the third event with details and the pinkie finger is the ending to the story.

The best way for students to practice writing at home is for them to keep a journal. All things written in a journal do not need to be developed stories. It can be thoughts, ideas about what to write about, words they have learned, and sketches that help them remember. Let them make it their own! Also, talk with your child about things that you do together as a family. Help them realize this is where writing begins-with experiences.

Here are some ideas for small moment stories:

December/January
  •  baking cookies with someone
  • decorating the tree
  • decorating the yard
  • a special dinner with family
  • opening their favorite present
  • playing with a toy as soon as they saw it
  • making an ornament for the tree
  • going somewhere special-parade, mall to see Santa, etc.
  • singing songs with family
  • making a snowman (if we ever get snow)
  • building a fort inside the house because it is too cold to go out and play
  • playing a game with someone
March/April

May
