The 3rd and 5th grade groups are working in the Language! Program which is a research based literacy intervention program. It is aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study

Current unit information for 3rd Grade
Unit 3 Concepts:
Phoneme-Grapheme correspondences: d, g, v

Some phonemes are voiced (voice box is activated) and some are  voiceless (voice box is not activated)

Knowledge questions require recall of facts. Some signal words are:  who, what, when , where, why, and how.

The setting of a story describes when and where the story takes place and introduces the main characters.

A sentence is a group of words that conveys a complete thought.

Unit 15 Concepts
A word must have at least one vowel phoneme.

Words have syllable parts. The number of vowel sounds in a word always equals the number of syllables in a word.

A word has one or more syllables. A closed syllable ends with a consonant phoneme and has a short vowel sound.
Analysis questions require breaking down information. Some signal words are: arrange, compare, distinguish.

Quotation marks are used to set off direct quotations.

Some verbs are not action words:
    *Forms of be are verbs. Some forms of be are: am, are, is, was, were.
    *Main verbs or helping verbs: Forms of be can be used as the main verb in a sentence. Forms of be can also me used as a helping verb in a sentence. Examples: am going, are sitting, is pulling, was fixing, were hopping.

A verb or verb phrase forms the base predicate.

A verb may be the main verb or a helping verb.

Correct forms of be are determined by:
    *Number (singular or plural)
    *Person (first=speaker; second=person spoken to; third=person spoken about)
