Welcome to the DISCOVERY TEAM!!! Ms. Barnhardt's 8th Grade Social Studies Class!!! Students in my Social Studies class are in the midst of studying about the American Revolution. Every Wednesday is Current Event day- a newspaper article is due and we watch CNN student news. This is our discussion day. Map Test are every Friday, please study with your teen nightly to prepare them for these test. verify - show me why it's right NOT - no way/no how justify - prove it/give reasons/explain your decision distinguish - tell all the ways things are different author's purpose - why did they write this? for what reason? conclusion - the end or final outcome/a final choice/a summation demonstrate - show me classify - put in the right group based on one of its traits evidence - objects/words/images that prove something determine - figure out how persuade - convince characteristics - traits, features, or things that tell about a person or thing The 12 Power Words Trace: Outline Analyze: Bread down into smaller steps or parts Infer: Read between the lines; read what the author doesn't say Evaluate: Judge or determine value Formulate: Build, create Describe: Tell all about it Support: Back it up; defend Explain: Tell; Tell sequence, parts, or details Summarize: The short version; key points or main idea Compare: Things that are similar Contrast: Things that are different Predict: Think about the future General Information Students have 4 core classes ( math, ELA, SS, and Science) and 2 Exploratory classes ( P.E./Health. Art. Band, Chorus, Business Technology, Technology Systems). Their exploratory classes meet from 9:35- 11:15. At other times, they are in core instruction. Book bags do need to fit in their lockers. Student uniform is a Red shirt with a collar & no logos and khaki pants or shorts. A white t-shirt may be worn under their red shirt, but it must not be longer than the red shirt. Sweatshirts may be Red (no logos) or China Grove Middle School AND they may have hoods this year. CGMS Relay for Life team is selling CGMS t-shirts, 10.00 cash. Students can wear these with their jeans on designated RFL days.
