Below is a list of teaching resources available for supporting the math curriculum:John Van de Walle's work is one of the foundations for the new math philosophy and curriculum. It's exciting!

TEACHING STUDENT-CENTERED MATHEMATICS: Grades K-3
This book is the first part of the Teaching Mathematics series by Van de Walle. It's a good mix of theory and proven, practical classroom experiences to build concepts and vocabulary in math.

TEACHING STUDENT-CENTERED MATHEMATICS: Grades 5-8
Great ideas for helping students understand that "math makes sense!" Chapters for fractions, geometry, and measurement are especially strong.

HOW TO TEACH MATH TO BLACK STUDENTS
Strategies and methods that will appeal to and be effective with ALL students. It's a great book for setting your course for the year.

GOOD QUESTIONS FOR MATH TEACHING; WHY ASK THEM and WHAT TO ASK
A great "recipe" for asking open-ended, multi-level response questions to guide students to construct meaning.

CLASSROOM DISCUSSIONS: USING MATH TALK TO HELP STUDENTS LEARN: Grades 1-6
Strategies for using student conversations to build meaning. They're going to talk, right? Let's direct it to learning!

MATH MATTERS: UNDERSTANDING THE MATH YOU TEACH, Grades K-8
Comprehensive, practical, and clear review of math concepts using simple vocabulary that will help you design and implement powerful math experiences in your classroom.

DRAW ME A STAR, by Eric Carle
Great application for directional and math words.

ARITHME-TICKLE; An Even Number of Odd Riddle-Rhymes
Word problems that are really FUN! Grades 2-5. Utilizes all operations. Great inspiration for students to try writing their own word problems.

MATHEMATICKLES!
Clever overview of math concepts in rhyming, picture book format. Grades
3-5. Great prototype for math writing and illustrations activities. One of my favorites for reaching right-brain learners.

THE BEST OF TIMES, Gred Tang
Greg Tang is the BEST for making math fun (The Grapes of Math and others). This one highlights multiplication concepts. Grades 3-5

MY LITTLE SISTER ATE ONE HARE, Bill Grossman
The author's name gives a hint at the "flavor" of this fun counting book. I'd love to share this one with K-2 classes. (It's a little gross, and reminds me of my daughter, Maggie!)

SIX-DINNER SID, Igna Moore
Nine lives are not the only multiple some cats deal with. Great picture book to get kids thinking about grouping numbers into multiples.
