Activities that you can do at home to help make school more successful: Have someone read to you DAILY!!!! Show them the front, the back, and the title of the book. Show them where to begin reading and which direction to read. Point to the words as they read. Talk about the print in the book- letters, words, and punctuation marks. Begin reading familiar words in the story. Tell them what happened in the story when you are finished. Enjoy this time together. Practice writing your first name neatly, forming each letter correctly. You should be in bed no later than 8:30 at night. Have a bedtime routine which includes reading. Pick out your clothes for the next day before going to bed. Get all of your stuff together for the next day before going to bed. You should have your bookbag packed and ready to go. Do NOT stay up watching TV. Sleep well. Wake up with a smile. Dress YOURSELF, you are a big kid. Eat a HEALTHY breakfast. Practice tying, zipping, buttoning, and buckling your clothes and shoes. HOW TO HELP YOUR EMERGENT WRITER: *Let them see you writing. *Provide him/her with an assortment of paper, pencils, crayons, pens, markers, etc. to experiment with. *Encourage him/her to draw pictures to share something exciting with family and friends. At the beginning stage of writing, we encourage children to write by drawing. Pictures should have character and setting that matches what they say. *When children are ready to write, encourage them to think of the beginning consonant sound. After they are able to do that, have them listen for the ending sound. Gradually begin adding other sounds into words as your child is developmentally ready. At this time of year, your child should be able to spell frequently used words, color words, and names of close family and friends correctly. *Create a word list of words that they ask you to spell. *Create a picture word list of family, friends, and other personal items. *BE SUPPORTIVE AND ENCOURAGING. TURN OFF THE TV! Get plenty of sleep! TURN OFF THE TV! HOW TO HELP YOUR EMERGING READER: *Let them see you reading. *Read with them DAILY. *Have an assortment of reading materials available. *Help them look for letters and words that they know. *Take a picture walk through a book before reading. Have your child use the pictures to develop a possible story. *BE SUPPORTIVE AND ENCOURAGING!!!! When working with your child on his/her writing, please be sure to encourage detailed and neat illustrations. This is a very important part of the beginning writer's scores. When you are talking about an illustration with your child or "checking" the work yourself, ask the following questions: Are you inside or outside? How can you tell? Is it day or night? How can you tell? Where are you? Can you see that in the picture? What are you doing? Can you see that in the picture? Who is in the picture? Is each person complete? Do they have a head with face and hair; a neck; a body with clothes that are colored-shirt, dress, pants, shorts, skirt,etc.; arms; hands; fingers; feet and/or shoes? Are the items colored appropriate colors? Is it done neatly? When your child is writing, ask the following questions: Is there space between each word? Is the first letter a capital letter? Are names and I's capitalized? Do you have a period at the end of each sentence? Are your letters formed properly? Did you spell the words you know correctly? Do you use the sounds you know to spell other words? Does your sentence match your illustration?
