2008-2009 School Year

Welcome to my web page. I hope that you will visit it often to hear about the wonderful and exciting things that are happening at North Rowan Elementary.

Our  PTA officers for the 2008-2009 school year are: President- Amy Smith, Vice-President-Keisha Sherrill,  Secretary-Carol Everhart, and Treasurer-Kelly Smith. A big thank you to these fine folks for volunteering their time and talents.

We are continuing to work with students who need extra help  using the Prescriptive Instruction program.  It is a web -base program designed to help students improve their skills in the area of Math and Reading. It allows students to work at his/her own pace and level. Also students may access this program anywhere that has internet access.  Our Title I teachers and EC teachers  are also using this program with their students to help improve basic reading and comprehension and math skills.

We are continuing with our Breakfast Book Club.  This year we will include  second graders as well as first graders.  There were three dates scheduled for second grade prior to the winter break and the first grade book club will begin this month.

We are also continuing our after school C.L.A.S.S. program which began in October.  Students in grades 3-5 were invited to attend the program based on pre-EOG and EOG scores.  We currently have approximatley 50 students enrolled in C.L.A.S.S ( community learning after school support).  The program is Monday-Thursday from 2:45-5:45.  Each day students receive a snack, extra help with homework, tutoring to improve critical thinking skills, and there is also an enrichment activity scheduled each day.  The program is made possible through a grant and in collaboration with Communities in Schools and Rowan Partners for Education.  We are delighted to report that we are seeing results with our C.LA.S.S. students.

We have recently completed the installation of Promethean boards in all of our classrooms K-5.  Our teachers will receive online training as well as training from our technology facilatator.  These are interactive boards that will allow the teachers to incorporate more technology in the classroom.

We are also excited to have Mrs. Nancy Killian , 4th grade teacher, selected as one of the six in the RSS system to received the 21st Century model classroom.

We invite everyone to come and see the exciting things that are going on at North Rowan Elementary.
