![]() We have been busy in first grade! We have been working on a variety of reading skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency. Recognizing letter sounds is very important for reading. We are learning how to use our knowledge of phonics to sound out decodable words. Some words cannot be sounded out because they are not spelled phonetically. We call these words our "red" words, and many of them are part of the "High Frequency Word List." These words must be memorized, and your child will be expected to know how to read and spell each of these words by the end of first grade. Please continue to review the first fifty words while beginning to work on words fifty-one through seventy-five. Please remember to read to/with your child each night. You can provide a model of fluent reading for your child, and his/her vocabulary will increase as he/she is exposed to words and the use of language. Encourage your child to read words that he/she can. Although your child may not be able to read the entire book, let him/her "help" by reading simple words that can be sounded out and the words on the high frequency lists I sent home. One text your child should be able to read is the decodable book I send home each week. Remember that the decodable book is intended to be read at home each night (Monday through Thursday). Repeated reading of the same text will improve your child's word recognition and will help him/her read more smoothly. Your child should be able to easily read or "sound out" each word in the decodable book. As a reminder, the book is due back to school on Friday. Remember that we are working together as a team to assist your child in reaching his/her greatest potential. Please feel free to contact me at 704-857-3400 if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your support and involvement in your child's education. Kim Collins Disclaimer: Linked sites are not under the control of the school district or its employees.
