We have had a great start to the year. The class, for the most part, works very well together. Science: We will start off the year with a unit on Animal Adaption. The class will complete experiments and research based on specific North Carolina animals. We also included two weeks of Health to go along with our mystery unit. Social Studies: At the beginning of the first quarter, we will focus on Geography. Our first project for Social Studies will be the North Carolina State Symbols.--More info to come. Please Note: Your child will have several tests in Social Studies, they will have plenty of time to study. Our first test for Geography will be Friday, October 9, 2009 Reading: We just finished a two week unit on Mysteries. Ask your child about the elements of a mystery. Everyone learned so much. Students should be reading 30 minutes each night. Please sign on the agenda's bottom section each day . After I find out at what level your child is reading, I will use that information to place them in appropriate groups. We will work in these small groups and focus on comprehension, vocabulary, reading skills and strategies through out the entire year. Math: We have been working on decimals and then moving into fractions. Please drill the multiplication facts daily with your child. All fourth graders should have all facts memorized before entering fourth grade. To find success, memorization is a must. We will continue to review addition, subtraction, multiplication and division within algebraic equations, multi step word problems and creation of our own word problems. Writing: We already have several pieces of work in our writing portfolios. We have written the following pieces: 1st person historical narrative, a mystery and an on demand prompt. At this time we are diagramming sentences to help us with structure. Tuesdays: Check out all the work your students bring home on Tuesdays in their red folder. Please sign any work that needs signatures and return to school promptly. YOUR CHILD WILL HAVE VERY LITTLE HOMEWORK THIS YEAR. BUT WITH THE NEED TO ALWAYS PRACTICE THE TIMES TABLES AND STUDY FOR SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE TEST YOUR CHILD MUST TAKE AND MAKE THE TIME TO DO THE ADDITIONAL WORK. HOMEWORK REFLECTS ON THE FINAL GRADE IN EACH CURRICULUM AREA. Student Behavior--- If your child earned a letter, it must be initialed by the parent each day. The bottom box in the Agenda must be signed to verify that your child has read for 30 minutes. The letters earned on the behavior report may keep them from attending PBS activities. A list of the behavior letters will be kept in the front pocket of the Agenda for daily reference. Please feel free to contact me via phone, email or letter. I enjoy working with each and every one of you for the success of your child. "Together Everyone Achieves More" Mrs. Alana L. Cherry |
