Welcome to the Shive Elementary School Media Center

Current Events:

We are looking for volunteers who would like to read with students through our Cracker Barrel Rockin' Reader program.  Cracker Barrel and Shive want to stress the importance of reading.  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, contact me via the "contact me" e-mail link on this page, contact the school, or Kathy Goodwin, our volunteer coordinator.

Kindergarteners are well on their way to becoming good readers.  They continue to amaze us with their ability to visit the media center to check out new books independently.  We are beginning to analyze what makes a book "good".  We are now discussing the North Carolina Children's Book of the Year process and looking at this year's nominees.  Of course, we will also be reading the books and integrating them with other kindergarten curricular areas. Voting will take place in March.  In addition, we are learning how our media center is arranged.  Students are learning, specifically, how our "everybody" books are arranged. We have been going on different types of hunts looking for specific areas of this section.

First Graders are also exploring "good" books and looking at the NC Children's book process.  In our next unit of study, we will integrate science as we compare humans to other living organisms.  We will be using the digital cameras to take pictures of living organisms around the school and comparing those to themselves. We will present our collected information by means of a slideshow where each child will pull in photographs that they took and add text to compare themselves to another living organism.

Second graders have been exploring famous people by looking at biographies. They compared themselves to the famous person they "researched" by completing a Venn Diagram using Kidspiration software.

Third graders have been exploring the "fantasy" genre as we read Jumanji by Chris Van Allsburg. We discussed and analyzed the elements of the story as it was read.  Students put themselves in the shoes of the characters as we created a Pages document describing the emotions the characters were feeling in the story. By integrating writing, they were "telling" rather than "showing" using phrases that depicted body language the character might have shown. Students, then, took their photograph with the software application, PhotoBooth, which provided a visual to  accompany their description of the character's feelings.

Fourth graders have been learning about science through technology.  We used internet resources and looked at their validity as we explored rocks.  In addition, we used internet sources and geological maps to find out the types of rocks and minerals found in the three regions of North Carolina. We also looked at the uses of each of the rocks or minerals they explored.

Fifth graders will soon be exploring biomes of the world. We will explore ecosystems within different biomes. We will create trading cards of animals in these ecosystems and how they have adapted to their environment.

Students are allowed to check out additional books for long holiday breaks.  Please encourage your child to read their books and return them to the media center upon arrival back at school.

                                   Plan now to attend!

FYI:  We print overdue notices quarterly. In an effort to conserve paper and toner, we are also asking students orally about missing items.  We are also checking to make sure that every student has a library book checked out.  If you do receive a notice, please ask your child whether they have returned their book(s) to the library. Often books have been returned to school and are in the classroom and not checked in through the media center when overdue notices are generated. Please let me know of any concerns that you might have about an overdue book.
