Welcome to the Shive Elementary School Media Center

Current Events:

Kindergarteners are well on their way to becoming good readers.  They continue to amaze us with their ability to visit the media center to check out new books independently.  During class visits, we have and will continue to discuss good book care habits.  We are currently deciding if we would rather be Pilgrims or Wampanoag by looking closely at each of their homes, food, and clothing. This will be our first attempt at "note-taking" by creating pictures to go along with each topic. After note-taking and student discussion, they will then "convince" the others that their choice is the best.

First graders are Shive "Mythbusters".  We are looking at the Objibwa Native American tribe.  Students participated in a carousel brainstorm where they were to anticipate what this tribe would have had as food, tools, homes, and clothing....drawing on their own perceptions and prior knowledge of how Native Americans "should be".We will then be detectives to research the facts and prove or disprove their myths.  Students will present their findings to others.

Second graders are continuing to practice their detective skills as well.  In conjunction with their literature study of owls in the classroom, students are visiting the media center to complete an "alphablocks" activity about owls, gather information about owls using a flipchart, and create an owl trading card.

Third graders are soon visiting the media center to learn about tricksters.  Students will learn about the characteristics of tricksters and trickster stories and they will pick out this information from stories.

Fourth graders are learning a research process called the Big 6.  They will continue to use this process while completing projects throughout their elementary school years.  Currently, we are using the Big 6 to gather information about our North Carolina state symbol animals. Students are working in cooperative groups to come up with questions they are curious to know about their animal, possible sources where they could collect this information...from within and outside the school, and will later create NC Symbol Animal trading cards upon completion of their research.  Last, they will reflect upon their "journey" with this project so that we can improve in the future.

Fifth graders are using print and electronic resources to study the effects of erosion.  Students will be creating vocabulary flash cards where they will locate definitions of their science vocabulary terms.  In addition, they will locate and cite pictures from the internet to illustrate their term.  Soon, they will create a Frayer Model where they will focus on specific erosion effects, such as meanders and canyons.  They will create a definition, an explanation of how and why this erosion occurs, and pictorial examples of what the erosion effect is and what it is not.

                            Battle of the Books

Students in fourth and fifth grade are encouraged to try out for our Battle of the Books team.  Our team will be formed soon.  I am tentatively planning to give a test to any interested student around the first week in December.  Students will then have the holiday break to continue to read any books (if they wish) that they haven't had the opportunity to read. Any student in fourth and fifth grade is eligible to participate. Students should be reading books from the following list:

Becoming Naomi Leon by Pam Munoz Ryan

Best School Year Ever by Barbara Robinson

Bunnicula:  A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery by Deborah and James Howe

A Dog's Life:  The Autobiography of a Stray by Ann M. Martin

Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath

How to Steal a Dog by Barbara O'Connor

The Last Holiday Concert by Andrew Clements

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien

Poppy by Avi

Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech

Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit

Yellow Bird and Me by Joyce Hansen

Our media center has multiple copies of all of these books.  Enjoy!

Students are allowed to check out additional books for long holiday breaks.  Please encourage your child to read their books and return them to the media center upon arrival back at school.

Future Events:

Next Book Fair: November 12-13

ONLY BOOKS are being sold.  A GREAT place to get that special person a gift or just a special way to say "thank you".

November 12: opening upon completion of the SWARM meeting

     November 13:  7:45-3:00

                                   Plan now to attend!

FYI:  We print overdue notices quarterly. In an effort to conserve paper and toner, we are also asking students orally about missing items.  We are also checking to make sure that every student has a library book checked out.  If you do receive a notice, please ask your child whether they have returned their book(s) to the library. Often books have been returned to school and are in the classroom and not checked in through the media center when overdue notices are generated. Please let me know of any concerns that you might have about an overdue book.
