Welcome to the Shive Elementary School Media Center

Current Events:

We are looking for volunteers who would like to read with students through our Cracker Barrel Rockin' Reader program.  Cracker Barrel and Shive want to stress the importance of reading.  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, contact me via the "contact me" e-mail link on this page, contact the school, or Kathy Goodwin, our volunteer coordinator.

Kindergarteners are well on their way to becoming good readers.  They continue to amaze us with their ability to visit the media center to check out new books independently.  We are beginning to analyze what makes a book "good".  We are talking about and illustrating parts of our favorite books.  In addition, the students are using digital cameras to take pictures of their classmates and illustrations. These will be made into a slide show.  Students will be adding their voice to their slide depicting reasons their chosen book is "good".  We will soon be discussing the North Carolina Children's Book of the Year process and looking at this year's nominees.  Of course, we will also be reading the books and integrating them with other kindergarten curricular areas.

First Graders are also exploring "good" books and looking at the NC Children's book process.  In addition, we will also be completing research using the Super 3 process of "Planning, Doing, and Reviewing" as we discuss President's Day.  Students will also be using the UNRAAVEL technique to better understand how to find their answers as they complete their research.

Second graders are continuing to practice their detective skills as they try to find out why penguins don't live in Rockwell.  They will be drawing conclusions after carefully researching the topic using electronic resources.  We will also create a multimedia presentation to show our knowledge of the topic.

Third graders will be exploring the "fantasy" genre as we read Jumanji by Chris Van Allsburg They will discuss and analyze the elements of this story as it is read.  Students will also put themselves in the shoes of the characters as we create a Pages document describing the emotions the characters are feeling in the story. Students will be taking their photograph with the software application, PhotoBooth, which will accompany their description of the character's feelings.

Fourth graders are learning about science through technology.  We are using internet resources and looking at their validity as we explore rocks.  In addition, we will be using internet sources to find out the types of rocks found in the three regions of North Carolina.

Fifth graders are exploring weather folklore by looking at proverbs handed down throughout time and looking at their scientific evidence to see if they are valid.  Can you predict the temperature by listening to a crickets chirp? Do the stars huddle before the Earth becomes a puddle?  Do cats lick themselves as a sign of fair weather? Ask your local fifth grader for explanations to these and other weather phenomena.

                                   Plan now to attend!

FYI:  We print overdue notices quarterly. In an effort to conserve paper and toner, we are also asking students orally about missing items.  We are also checking to make sure that every student has a library book checked out.  If you do receive a notice, please ask your child whether they have returned their book(s) to the library. Often books have been returned to school and are in the classroom and not checked in through the media center when overdue notices are generated. Please let me know of any concerns that you might have about an overdue book.
