Mrs. Anderson's Second Grade Web Page You may email Mrs. Anderson at: andersdl@rss.k12.nc.us ![]() Welcome to Second Grade www.firstinmath.com and www.pearsonsuccessnet.com/snpapp/login/login.jsp are great sites to practice math - passwords and logins have been sent home, please let me know if your child does not remember this information. www.spellingcity.com is a great site to practice spelling 2nd GRADE EXPECTATIONS· Pay attention and participate in class. · Raise hand to ask questions if something is not understood. · Answer comprehension questions in complete sentences (orally and written). · Read daily! Students should be reading on Level M or higher by the end of second grade. · Correct spelling of frequently used words, words on the Word Wall, 200 high frequency words, and words found in the Word Books. Word Books are stored in the desks. Points are taken off for incorrect spelling. · Memorization of addition and subtraction facts through 18, using flash cards, computer games, timed tests, etc. · Mastery of reading and spelling 200 high frequency words. · Complete Reading Response Journal, get parent to initial it, and return Reading Response Journal to school daily. · Write homework in agenda, take agenda home and back to school daily, get parent signature. · Neat, legible handwriting. Points will be taken off for incorrect letter and number formation.
STORY WRITING GUIDELINES · Stories should contain a clear beginning, middle, and ending. · Include details and transition words (ex; later, all of a sudden, just as, afterwards, finally, etc.) · Use capital letters and punctuation marks correctly. · Spell 200 high frequency words correctly. · Use correct grammar. · The rubric for scoring of second grade writing can be found at http://www.rss.k12.nc.us/eled/Handouts/WritingRubirc/k-2WritingRubric.pdf Second grade students should be at the Early Independent Level on the rubric by the end of the year. Encourage your child to speak in complete sentences. This will help improve his or her writing skills.
HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS All first grade students are required to recognize when reading and correctly spell the first 100 words. Second grade students are required to recognize when reading and correctly spell all 200 words in their daily writing. Please help your child to learn these words as part of his/her study time. THURSDAY FOLDERS
Please have your child correct the mistakes on the Thursday Folder work, to better reinforce the skills taught. This is an excellent way for you to help your child at home.
CONFERENCES and RTI Our instructional day is to be honored from 8:30 to 3:00. We will have a first quarter report card conference. If you require a conference before then, please send a note in the agenda, email me (andersdl@rss.k12.nc.us), or you may call (704 279-3195) and I will respond as soon as possible to schedule a time convenient for both of us. If your child is in Tier 2, 3, or 4 of RtI (Responsiveness to Instruction), we will schedule a conference with Mrs. McCall at the beginning of November. ENHANCEMENTSOur enhancement schedule is: Wed 8:45 – 9:00 Guidance Mrs. McCall 7 x a year Wednesday 12:45-1:15 P.E. Mrs. Earnhardt Thursday 12:45-1:15 Art Mr. Smith Friday 12:45-1:15 Music. Mrs. Shue Recess 11:00-11:30 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday Students must wear tennis shoes in order to participate safely in P.E and recess. Media instruction with Mrs. Moyes and Computer instruction with Mrs. Anderson will be a flexible schedule. If you have any items we can use for prizes or rewards in our Treasure Box, we would greatly appreciate them. Thank you for the donations you make to our classroom. TIMED MATH TESTS Timed math tests will be given on addition and subtraction facts. Your child will progress through the timed tests at his or her own rate. Two scores of 100% will be expected before moving to the next fact level. Each child is expected to correctly answer 18 facts in one minute. When we do Math Facts in a Flash in the computer lab the children must correctly answer 40 facts in two minutes to move to the next level. Your child must memorize all the facts. We will add to and subtract from 999 this year.
GRADESThis is the first year that your child will earn grades. The evaluation key in second grade is: 93% - 100% A excellent achievement 85% - 92% B good achievemen 77% - 84% C average achievemen 70% - 76% D below grade level (At Risk) 69% and lower F well below grade level (At Risk)
