Reading

First grade is a very important year for reading and comprehension.  Each night it is extremely important that you read with your child and ask them questions pertaining to the story you read to check for comprehension.  Each night your child will have the story for the week to read.  On Friday, the students will take a test on the vocabulary words from the story.  This test will contain fill-in-the-blank sentences and the students must fit the correct vocabulary word into the sentences.  Later, the students will start taking comprehension tests about each story.

Spelling

Each week your child will receive a list of spelling words.  These words are found in the story or are part of the 100 high frequency words taught in first grade.  Every Friday a spelling test will be given.  I will call out each word and the children must spelling it correctly on their paper.  Letters that are not formed correctly will cause the word to be marked incorrect.  Please help your child study their spelling words every night by calling out the word and letting them spell it to you and also take some practice tests on paper to make sure your child is forming their letters correctly.

Math

In the first grade, the students must be able to read the number words 1 to 100 by the end of the year.  Each quarter we work on 25 of the words.  So, this first quarter we will be working on 0 to 25.  A practice number word assessment will be sent home for you and your child to practice.  It would be a great idea to write each number word on an index card so your child can practice reading the number words.  Addition and subtraction facts are another important part of first grade math.  We expect the students to recall these facts very quickly.  Addition and subtraction flash cards will be sent home soon to practice. Later, the students will take 45 second timed addition and subtraction tests.

What can you do to help your child at home???

*Ask your child daily what they are learning about in school!
*Read to and with your child daily! Ask questions when you read.

Here are some great questions to ask: Who are the characters in the story? Where is the story taking place? What happened in the begining, middle and end of the story? What was your favorite part and why? What was the problem in the story and how was it solved? What does this story make you think of? Is this book like another book you've read?

**PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE addition & subtraction facts up to 10. The students should be able to give the answer as fast as they can snap their fingers.

Please remember to read with your child 20 minutes daily!!! It is so important that they read everyday!!! When they have finished reading a book with you, please ask them to retell you the story, without looking at the book. Talk about what happened first, next, etc. READING COMPREHENSION AND RETELL IS A MUST FOR HELPING YOUR CHILD SUCCEED!!!

Parents, please go to arbookfind.com to see if a book is an AR book. This will help in completing the READING LOG and help your child when he or she takes the AR test at school. Students will take the test on the computer at school.

Have a wonderful week!!!
