rdd Quarter Topics: (based on Standard Course of Study)

Sponge Activities: Sponge activities will continue this quarter as our way of start class.  These activities will include Daily Oral Language (DOL) skills, journaling, Quick Writes, random assessment, vocabulary, analogies, Word Skills, etc. Ask your child to show you thier Word Skills book.  You will be surprised how many new words they may know.

North Carolina Heroes(Research Paper): We will continue to work on our Research Paper for the next several weeks. We have really worked hard at learning how to create an outline for our research. Using an outline helps us to organize and prioritize the information we obtain from our resources. We had made folders with envelopes to help organize our index cards that we will use to document that information we gather.  Our next step is to focus on paraphasing (which some of us have worked on in Social Studies) and actually doing our research. We have days set aside to do research in the library and in the computer lab. We will also focus on bibliographies for our final product while doing the research. Once the research is complete, we will work hard to write our rough draft and eventually will finish this unit by typing the paper in MLA Format at school.  Ask your child to share with you what an outline should look like, what famous North Carolinian they have chosen for their paper, and to share with you what they have learned about the whole research paper process.

Book Projects: Each quarter your child will be asked to complete a book project. Our third quarter project will be "Pop-Up Settings"  Your child will be asked to select a historical fiction during a future library visit. From the book they should choose a historical setting to depict in their "Pop-Up". This is a fun project that your child will enjoy.  We will start the project in class; however, it will need to be finished at home.  Please take the time to ask your child to share with you what book they chose and what deadline was given for this project.

Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad: This short story in our literature book is always a favorite of many 8th graders. We will use this story is our focus, for not only EOG practice, but for Black History Month.  The students will finish the unit with a group project where they create a Discussion Collage about what freedom means to them.  These collages are always a hit and show just how artistic your child is.  Ask your child to share with you what they learned about Harriet and her role as "Moses" in this movement against slavery.

EOG Practice: I'm sure by now your child has told you about the numerous assessments they have had in many of their classes. Even though the kids complain, these assessments are a helping tool in finding out the areas we need work on to prepare us for the EOGs. With that in mind, we will spend a majority of the end of 3rd quarter and all of 4th quarter preparing for the EOG's.  This practice will entail reading skills such as inferencing, drawing conclusions, summarizing, etc. as well as reading strategies like asking questions while reading, rereading, predicting, etc. We will focus on non-fiction genre, as well as poetry, which the assessments show we need lots of work. Be sure to ask your child to share with you what we are working on to prepare them for the EOGs!!!

You will here me refer to the Standard Course of Study (SCOS) on this section of my webpage. The SCOS states what material should be covered in each subject for each grade level. You can visit the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (www.ncdpi.org) for further information.

Please be sure to ask your child about their day. You are important part of their education and even though you may think they do not want to share what is going on in their lives, you may be surprised how a little attention can go a long way.
