1st Quarter Topics: (based on Standard Course of Study)

Sponge Activities: Each week our class will begin with a different class starter activity that we call our "Sponge Activity".  These activities will include Daily Language Practice (also known as DLP until we come up with a catchy name), journaling, vocabulary/analogy study or Sustained Silent Reading (SSR). Each starter focuses on a skill from our SCOS (Standard Course of Study). Ask your child to share with you what our "Sponge" activity is for the week.

Library: Our class will visit the library every other Friday. Every child is encouraged to check out two books. Your child will receive a grade for returning their books on time. This is one way to ensure your child will keep a clear account. Please see important dates below for our special library days.

Book Projects: Each quarter your child will be asked to complete a book project. This quarter's book project will be creating a Character Trading card from a fictional novel they chose from our library.

Beginning of the Year Pre-Assessments:  We will spend the first few weeks of school assessing our reading skills to see what areas we need to focus on this year in class. Our assessments will also include discovering what type of learner we are as well as other test that will allow us to be more aware of ourselves as readers.

Reading Short Text: Our focus in reading this quarter will center around short text. These short text can be short stories, memoirs, essays, poetry, etc. By focusing on comprehension with short text, we will become more prepared for reading longer text such as novels. The short text will be used to practice learning many of the literary terms/skills need in order to comprehend the selection.

Reading Strategies/Skills: One day of the week we will focus on a reading stategy that will help with comprehension while reading. These skills will include such skills as finding main idea, summarizing, comparing and contrasting, etc. While learning these skills, we will learn reading strategies such as predicting, rereading, etc. that we will use as fix up strategies while reading.

EOG Practice: I know that May and EOG's seem like a long time from now, but it will be here before you know it. Some time will be dedicated each week for your child to practice an EOG like selection. This will make them more familiar with this type of test and give them the confidence they need to succeed.

Writing:  We will be revisiting the many types of writing(persuasive, expository, narrative, descriptive) we have focused on in the past. Our writings will also include reflections, discussions, etc. After reading some of the essays in our short text study, we will discuss the characteristics of the essay and mimic their writing as well.

You will here me refer to the Standard Course of Study (SCOS) on this section of my webpage. The SCOS states what material should be covered in each subject for each grade level. You can visit the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (www.ncdpi.org) for further information.

Please be sure to ask your child about their day. You are important part of their education and even though you may think they do not want to share what is going on in their lives, you may be surprised how a little attention can go a long way.
