It is hard to believe that we are well into the month of October and we gave completed over half of our first quarter! Our students have settled into first grade very nicely and we are pleased with the way in which they have adapted to classroom routines and procedures. Although we began the year reviewing kindergarten skills, we we have learned many new skills. We are gradually learning skills at a more rapid pace. Halloween Happenings We are getting ready for Halloween! Each student needs to bring to school a small pumpkin and a bag of halloween candy or other treats (pencils, erasers, small toys, etc.) Please have both pumpkins and treats at school no later than Monday, October 26.
Assessments Your child’s spelling list for this week consists of all 25 high frequency words. All words have been on previous lists, but students need to work on these words before our assessment on Thursday. We need to be careful to avoid backward letters and capitals in spelling words. Please also continue to practice dictation at home with your child. You can use the sentences on class dictation papers or make up your own. Students should be able to spell all introduced high frequency words, decodable CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant, as in mat, pig, bus, dad, hen, etc.) and use capitalization and correct ending punctuation. Conferences As the end of our first quarter draws near, we are beginning to prepare for these parent conferences. Please indicate a first, second, and third choice on your conference form and return to school as soon as possible. We will honor your preferences on a “first come, first serve” basis and will try to accommodate your choices as much as possible. If the listed conference options are not convenient for you, please let us know and we will try to work with you. Math: Doubles Facts We are learning strategies to help us add. This week we are learning our doubles facts. Please assist your child with the following doubles facts at home. 1 + 1 = 2 2 + 2 = 4 3 + 3 = 6 4 + 4 = 8 5 + 5 = 10 6 + 6 =12 7 + 7 = 14 8 + 8 = 16 9 + 9 = 18

During second quarter, students independently read and take quizzes on books within their own reading levels. Keep Reading!
