WELCOME TO 5TH GRADE!

*BE SURE TO READ THE FAMILY TIMES NEWSLETTER FROM THE READING STATION PRACTICE BOOK! IT IS SENT HOME THE FIRST DAY OF EACH WEEK.   YOU WILL FIND  VOCABULARY WORDS ON IT, ALONG WITH OTHER INFO AND ACTIVITIES TO HELP YOUR CHILD WITH READING COMPREHENSION AND VOCABULARY.

*SPELLING WORDS ARE COPIED IN THE STUDENTS HOMEWORK FOLDER EACH MONDAY.  DAILY HOMEWORK IS ALSO WRITTEN THERE.

* GRADED PAPERS ARE SENT HOME WEEKLY. 

Dear parents:

Encourage your child to continue doing his/her best. Please ask your child questions about what he/she has read to help improve comprehension. 

5th Grade Math is very important!  Talk with your child about what he/she is learning. 

Read daily with your child.  Each child has an AR goal.  Remind your child to work towards her/his goal.  Reading is very important!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me.  My planning period is from 2:05pm to 2:45pm each day.

**WEEKLY HOMEWORK **

1.  Reading Station Work is due each Friday.  We work on this in class, but what your child does not finish each day he/she is expected to complete at home. 

2.  Write Spelling words 3 times each and write a synonym for each vocabulary word. Due Friday.

3.  Write the definition for each vocabulary word and write a sentence with each vocabulary word.  Be sure to underline the Vocabulary word!  Due Friday.

4. Any math not finished at school is to be completed at home.

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?

READING: We are reading Inside Out.

MATH:  We multiplying whole numbers.  And, as always, reviewing multiplication facts!   
 

GRAMMAR:  We are learning about regular and irregular plural nouns.

SPELLING: Test on Friday.  We are learning about digraphs(ch, sh, ph,th)

VOCABULARY: Test on Friday. We are learning about prefixes.

 WRITING: We are reviewing how to write a descriptive paragraph.

SCIENCE: We are learning about plant and animal cells.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  We are learning about Native Americans.  We are researching Native Americans and learning how to make a powerpoint presentation with the information.   

PROJECTS (At home)

These projects will be completed at home.  Some research may be done during class.  This will vary according to the project and amount of time available.  More information will be sent home as it is time to begin the project. 

**Some supplies that will be needed for the projects are:  1) heavy cardboard or something to build shelter on. 2) materials needed for shelters will vary 3) Paper for essays 4) homemade playdough (I will post recipe and send a copy home) 5) Posterboard 6) Pencils, markers, scissors, crayons  

Social Studies:

Native American Shelters  (Ask your child for a letter that was sent home on Friday about this)

European Explorers Essay

Life in Colonial America Poster

Great Americans Essay

Science:

Build a Cell

Layers of the Earth Model

WE ARE PLANNING A COLONIAL DAY AGAIN THIS YEAR!  THIS WAS A GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR 5TH GRADERS LAST YEAR.  PLEASE BE THINKING ABOUT HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD DRESS AS A COLONIAL CHILD.  I WILL POST MORE INFO LATER AND SEND A LETTER HOME AS SOON AS THE DATE HAS BEEN SET.
