Welcome to First Grade!

Mrs. Adcock and Mrs. Baer

Thank you for visiting our website.  We hope that the information here is useful to you.  If you would need information that is not here, please feel free to send a note with your child, send me an email by clicking on the button on this page, or giving me a call at school (704.857.3400 extension 115).

Spelling :  Review the spelling words each night with your child.  The students will take their spelling test on Friday, January 21st.

Reading:  This week in reading we will be reading the story, Moving Day.  It is about a hermit crab searching for a new shell for his home.  The students will be working on the skill, compare and contrast.

Math:  We are continuing with skip counting by 2, 5, and 10.  We will also be learning about odd and even numbers, ordinal numbers through twentieth, and find patterns in reading charts.

Social Studies:  We will be studying different land forms-mountains, hills, valleys, plains, rivers, lakes, and oceans.   The children will be given a map of North Carolina and will label and color the different land forms.

*Please continue to read with your child each night and record it in their reading log.  After reading with your child ask important questions like -Who were the characters in the story?  Where did the story take place(setting)  What was the problem in the story?  How was the problem solved?  What was your favorite part of the story?

Writing:  The children are working on adding more details in their writing and their illustrations.  They are on their way to becoming good authors.  Please encourage your child to keep a "writing journal" at home.  They can write about something the family does, a movie they have seen, their favorite meal, or anything they choose.  The children are more than welcom to share their stories with the class.

*Please continue to check your child's agenda each day.  This is a great way for us to communicate with each other.

Feel free to visit in the classroom and come to eat lunch with your child.  Our lunch time is 12:05.

You are always welcome at Knollwood!

I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas!
