 What do school counselors do?

  • Talk with individual students
  • Conference with parents about any concerns with your child
  • Meet with students in small groups
  • Visit classrooms to teach lessons about things that will help students in school and out of school, such as, bullying, stress management, study skills, friendship skills, and testing skills.
  • Assist with intervention for at-risk students.

Who is a school counselor for?

Your school counselor is here for EVERYONE!  I am here for every student, every teacher, and every parent who is part of the Shive Elementary community.

Facebook Pages

I would highly recommend that your child does not have a Facebook page. A lot of information can be publicly available including your their name, profile picture, gender, current city, networks you belong to, and pages they are a fan of SafeKids.com, 2009.  This information might be available to school systems, employers, and newspapers.  Another concern is cyberbullying, which is bullying using the internet or some other electronic device such as a cell phone.  I am aware of students in our own school who have been subjected to cyberbullying.  Below you will find a list of tips to help your child with cyberbullying.

  Tips for Stop Cyberbullying

  • Don't respond if someone bullies you, remember the reaction is what the bully wants.  It gives them power over you.
  • Don't retaliate(payback). Getting back at the bully turns you into one.
  • Save the evidence.  The harassing messages can usually be captured, saved, and shown to someone who can help.
  • Talk to a trusted adult immediately if you are being bullied.
  • Block the bully in the form of instant messages, texts, or profile comments.  Use the privacy tools available.
  • Don't be a bully
  • Be a friend and not a bystander.  Watching or fowarding mean messages empowers bullies and hurts victims even more.  If you can, tell bullies to stop and report if a bully is hurting one of your friends.  (SafeKids.com, 2009)

Tips on Computer Safety for Your Children

  • Use parental controls on your computer
  • Make sure your computer is in a central location in the home so that parents can monitor.  I advise that your child does not have a computer in their bedrooms.
  • Have access to your child's password so that you may monitor what they are looking at and how they are communicating with their friends.
  • Warn your child not to give out identifying information
  • Warn your child to never meet someone in person who they have met on-line
  • Remind your child to never respond to messages that are suggestive, obscene, belligerent, threating, or make them feel uncomfortable.
  • Make their password at least eight characters long including numbers, capital letters, and symbols  (SafeKids.com, 2009)
