Some points of interest:
Students seem to have a few misconceptions about the Spanish program. This will attempt to address a few of them.
Misconception #1.
I really only "need" to "just pass" Spanish 1.
A: Though not a rule, it has been my experience that students not making higher than a "C" in Spanish 1 are not successful in passing Spanish 2. Therefore, a student should "set their sights" a little higher, and try to get an "A" or a "B" in Spanish 1.
Misconception #2.
I don't really need Spanish, do I?
A: 2 years of Spanish (or another foreign language) is required for those who are in the uppermost pathway: college/university prep. Students who are only in the "college tech-prep" pathway do not have a foreign language requirement at the current time.
Misconception #3.
I can wait to take Spanish II.
A: If a student is planning to take more than one semester of foreign language, they should definitely be done back to back. Chances of forgetting what you have learned increase with each break or gap in learning.
Misconception #4.
It will be a good idea to just take Spanish 1 and 2 as a freshman, and get it out of the way.
A: Students should take foreign language as close as possible to the end of their high-school career. Most colleges and universities have a foreign language requirement for graduation. It would be smart to have Spanish fresh in your brain before heading to college, again, it gives you less time off for forgetting to take place, and gives you an advantage in the college Spanish classroom.
Misconception #5.
I can start applying myself at anytime. Just because I'm not doing well now, doesn't mean I won't "pull it out" at the end. I'll just study real hard at the end for the exam.
A: Spanish builds upon itself. For this reason, getting a good foundation in Spanish I is vital to success in Spanish II and beyond. Until a student has a mastery in the elementary parts of Spanish, upper level will never be a successful experience. Chapter tests always build upon past units, and always contain previously covered vocabulary and/or concepts.

The
NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) lists the Standard Course
of Study Objectives which will be taught this semester, as usual. These
can be found by clicking here for Spanish I, and here for Spanish II.
The
textbook series adopted by our system is designed and aligned to meet
the objectives provided by NCDPI. Our textbook is the "Realidades"
series by Pearson-Prentice Hall, which will help us achieve these
goals/objectives of the Standard Course of Study.
