Cursive Handwriting
Third graders expand their handwriting principles and begin to learn the art of cursive writing. As we grow older, we mold our own unique forms of handwriting and find a style all our own. For the purpose of technique and form, please encourage your child to write in cursive "the school way."

Aa   Bb   Cc   Dd   Ee   Ff   Gg   Hh

Ii   Jj   Kk   Ll   Mm   Nn   Oo   Pp   Qq

Rr   Ss   Tt   Uu   Vv   Ww   Xx   Yy   Zz

The cursive letters we have introduced and should be
practicing correctly in our daily writing are noted in yellow.
Click the chalkboard to see the correctly scripted alphabet.

School-Home Connection
"What can I do to help my child at home?"
Teachers are often asked this simple question. Here are
a few things that are always helpful for a third grader.

Talk with your child everyday about school.
Question your child about his/her day at school. Don't simply rely on "What did you do in school today?" as your conversation starter; it only leaves your child open to respond with "NOTHING!" Stay informed and updated on what is going on in the classroom to be better equipped with questions to ask your child. If you take an interest in education, the more he/she will want to do the same.

Read to and with your child daily.
Make reading a part of your daily routine. Read books, magazines, newspapers, menus, shopping lists, recipes, brochures, maps... the possibilities are endless! Allow your child to see reading as a necessity in everyday life. Talk about what you read, what you learned, and future reading experiences. Make reading a fun and enjoyable family time.

Practice addition and subtraction facts to 18.
Students should be able to answer a simple addition or subtraction equation in a matter of seconds, within the time it takes us to snap our fingers. Look for patterns. Create catchy rhymes or jingles. The more practice your child has with these facts, the easier multiplication facts will be.

Don't study... LEARN!
Use homework activities as a time to actually learn the importance and relevance of school-related content. Material that is simply memorized has no merit or meaning to your child. Never focus on studying for a test simply to make a good grade. Make your child's education meaningful, something he/she will be able to use for years to come.
