WELCOME TO THE 2009-10 SCHOOL YEAR! THIS IS MR. IRIZARRY'S PAGE FOR GRADE 7 (B) SOCIAL STUDIES: OVERVIEW OF SOCIAL STUDIES MR. IRIZARRY ( a.k.a Mr. I ) In Grade 7 Social Studies we will look at the history of the United States from the point of view of the major conflicts that have shaped the nation. History often moves through conflict, and sometimes those conflicts are violent. This is especially true of those events that bring about major changes. This year we will look at the American Revolution, Manifest Destiny, the Civil War, expansionism and imperialism, World War I and World War II, and the wars in Korea and Viet Nam in the context of the Cold War. Those conflicts, that span and shape our history, take the country from its foundation to its place as a powerful nation in the world. ------------------ From colonies to a new nation ----------------- In this unit we will study the birth of the United States. After the French and Indian Wars, the British crown initiates a series of new taxes and laws that lead to colonial discontent and rebellion. This rebellion develops into a war against Britain and it culminates in American independence. New principles take hold in the form of the Declaration of Independence, and eventually the Constitution with its Bill of Rights. |
