All Core Classes: Lesson 28 word search/crossword puzzle; Study for the vocab/spelling quiz.

This past week we have been preparing for EOG's by reading and answering questions on non-fiction articles about wild animals. We are striving to build "stamina" for the upcoming reading end of grade test (week of May 18th). Students are encouraged to read at home for at least fifteen minutes per night. Try to build up to thirty or forty-five minutes per night. This will greatly improve your stamina! Remember, the reading test is LONG! There are eight or nine passages and approximately 65 questions to answer. The longer you can read and stay focused, the better the odds that you will do well :)

The next two weeks we will be working on poetry terms, poetry analysis, and writing poems.

Core 2 & 6 ONLY: MGR Project is due one week from today (Friday, March 20th). Work on your project over the weekend. All students should have the following completed by next Friday:

Binder with illustrated cover page, "Dear Reader" letter (we will go over this next week in class); a copy of the MGR research paper (edited to remove any typos); Works Cited page; ten different genre products (including the List Poem, Two-Voice Poem, RAFT, Six-Room Image Poem). If the student chooses to dress up as his/her person (topic) that will count as the Artistic Element, and then he/she will only have nine products in the binder; all students will also have an illustrated Tri-Fold Board to display for their in-class presentation as well as the Multigenre Madness Celebration on Tues. March 24th at 6:30pm in the school cafeteria. Sign-ups for in-class presentations will begin next week. Every student will be expected to present his/her project to the class.

Students must choose the artistic element (can by fulfilled by dressing as the person he/she researched or someone associated with the event) and FIVE additional pieces. Does it flow logically and are events in chronological order? Are the details you've included relevant? Have you rewritten sections where you merely listed fact after fact? Would someone want to read your paper? Have you created an interesting opening paragraph? These are some questions to consider as you revise your paper. Draft #2 due on Monday, February 23rd (you will hand in both your Draft #1 and Draft #2).

Thursday, January 15, 2009

All Core Classes: Lesson 16 word search; Study for vocabulary/spelling quiz; Bring your novel to class; Final copy of problem-solution essay due by the end of class tomorrow. We will peer edit/revise essays in class today and students will have an opportunity to work on their final copy in class today.

Core 2 & 6 only; TOPICS/PARENT SIGNATURES due tomorrow. I have received some of the topics from students already. Some of the topics students have chosen are not appropriate for this project, as the individuals are too young to have made much of an impact on the culture. I have strongly suggested that students consider the age of the individual before committing to that topic. It will be difficult to conduct the level of research required if the person being researched is 21 and hasn't been around long enough for us to analyze their influence on society.

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

All Core Classes: Lesson 16 vocabulary part F; complete the rough draft of your problem-solution essay. Use the colored cards (one card per paragraph). Students had most of the class period today to work on these essays, so most of them should have completed this in class or be close to completing it by the end of class.; Continue reading your novel--must be finished by Tuesday, Jan. 20th.

Core 2 & 6 ONLY: Multigenre Research topics and parent signatures are due by Friday.

The Lightning Thief update:

We are well into The Lightning Thief novel (we are reading chapter 9 today) and the students are thoroughly enjoying it! Every day they come in to class and beg me to pass out the books. It does my heart good to see students so eager to devour a book! The main character, Percy Jackson, has just found out that he is a "half-blood". His mother is a mortal and his father is Poseidon, the god of the sea. Percy is staying at Camp Half-Blood with the other half-blood campers. All of the twelve major gods/goddesses have cabins at the camp. The project described below is designed to tap into what the students know about these gods/goddesses as well as allow them to use their imaginations. I hope they learn a lot and have fun doing it, too!

"DESIGN A CABIN" PROJECT was assigned today. It is due on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15th. Students received the project requirements today as well as the rubric. Students will choose one of the gods/goddesses and design what they think that god/goddess' cabin at Camp Half-Blood would look like. Students have the basic information on each of the gods to use as a start. They may use additional information from other sources as well. They have a choice to either draw the cabin (focusing on its interior) OR make a three-dimensional cabin (for example, using a box they could create the interior of the cabin). It is up to the student to choose either of these creative expressions. After completing the cabin, students must write a paragraph describing what a visitor to this cabin would experience. I will provide large white construction paper for the drawing and a large lined index card for the paragraph. The rubric must be attached to the project with the student's name on it.
