Assignments

This page is where you can find the following assignments for ELA. This web page will be updated weekly so that you can stay on top of your assignments and your child's assignments. This website is currently under construction. Please pardon its appearance as I work to develop a more comprehensive website, including project descriptions, purpose, grading policies and expectations. 

All class-work becomes homework unless otherwise specified. There are certain assignments that are specifically homework.

All assignments are still due on their due dates or the following school day, even if their is a snow day. Certain allowances will be made to accommodate the missed day.

Worklist for March 23 - March 27:
1. Powerpoint Presentations Monday! 

2. Group A & B: Interactive Notebook: read The Alchemist pp. 152 - 167. Answer I.N. Pop-Up Questions only. Due 3/27. 

3. Group A & B: Alchemist Study Guide: Assigned on 3/24. Due: April 2nd. Exam is on Thursday, April 9.

4. Group A & B: MCAS Study Guide: Check your answers with the Control Packet. Put a star (*) next to any of the question you did not get right or any of the questions you weren’t sure of. Restudy those. Hand in your starred packet by Friday, March 27 for a grade.

5. Group A & B: MCAS writing assignments: Assigned in small group. Follow Mr. S. instructions. This will help prepare you for the MCAS.

6. Group A & B: MCAS Practice Test: assigned Thursday, March 26 during class.You will correct each other’s work on Monday, March 30.

7. Group A & B: Shelf Work – Grammar Album – verbs. Due this Thursday, 3/26.

8. Group A & B: Lesson. Due April 1st. Must be submitted and reviewed by Mr. S before that day!

9. Group A & B: Humanities Study Guide Greece. Assigned week of 3/2. Due in Social Science mailboxes by April 13 and 14.

10. Independent Reading

DUE TO THE SCHOOL CANCELLATION THURSDAY, YOUR POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS WILL NOT BE UNTIL MONDAY. PLEASE LET YOUR CLASSMATES KNOW AS THEY MAY NOT CHECK THIS SITE.

Worklist for March 2 - March 6:
1. Group A & B - Reading Log, signed every night, excluding Monday due to snow day.

2. Group A & B - Interactive Notebook: read The Alchemist pp. 127 - 133. Answer I.N. Pop-Up Questions only. Assigned on 2/23. Due 2/24. Late. 

3. Group A & B - "Goat Lady" assignment. Assigned TBD (to be determined). Due TBD. Stay tuned!

4. Group A & B - Interactive Notebook: read The Alchemist, pp. 133 - 142. Answer IN and Pop-Up Questions. Assigned TBD. Due: TBD. Stay tuned! Stay on top of the Alchemist assignments! We are almost done and will move onto Greek and Roman myths after we review the Alchemist and take our TEST! 

5. Group A & B - MCAS questions and readings. Due: 3/9. No exceptions. 

6. Powerpoint - see rubric. Due: 3/12, with all required materials (again! see your rubric!). To be completed during class. Powerpoint  presentations to be completed during class week of 3/16. 

7. Shelf-Work: Verbs. V-10, V-11, V-12 Due Friday, 3/6. Don't slack on this. Total Grammar Album for Verbs due 3/20. 

8. Group A & B - Independent Reading, card, with card #, due 3/6. Choose new book next week. 

9. Group A & B - Revise any returned work as directed by Mr. S according to the due dates he gave you individually. 

10. Group A & B - NON-FARM SCHOOL FOLKS: Stimulus Package Research Essay. Final Due Date: 3/6. Extra Credit Assignment: Create a powerpoint according to the Stimulus Package rubric for this; otherwise, you will have to do a REV packet. 

11. Portfolio - First Portfolio Reflection: Due Date extended to 3/9.  Group A, 7th graders, Academic and Personal Goal Sheets due 3/9.

12. Group A & B - Organize binder. Due by 3/5. Checked in class. 

13. Group A & B - Animal Poem. Assigned on 2/2. Due Friday 3/6, no exceptions. 

14. Group A & B - Part I of Final Project, "Creating a Lesson" - due April 1. Stay Tuned for Part II! 

15. Group A, Grade 8 - Prefixes, Suffixes, and Roots - packet assigned on 1/30. Due 2/13. Late. Test Cancelled. 

**16. Group A & B - Notebooks Due Friday, 3/6. WEX to be picked back up next week. You won't have much independent work time. 

17. Group A & B - Humanities Study Guide for Greece. Assigned by Mr. Murdock at his discretion (TBD). Due Date: 4/13 and 4/14 (depending upon which Group you are in!). This due date is non-negotiable! This study guide will count in BOTH ELA and Social Science! 

18. Last, but not least - Group A & B - Powerpoint Vocabulary. You are responsible for keeping any and all vocabulary in your ELA Notebook.

Nightly Homework:
Monday
1. Interactive Notebook plus pop-up questions - Read photocopy of pages 80-84. Answer questions. Due Tuesday, 2/3.
2. Read for 20 minutes and have reading log signed. 



Worklist for Week of January 26 - January 30:
I apologize for not posting last week. I was out sick for the majority of the week.
1. Groups A & B - Current Event - Due Friday, 1/30
2. Independent Reading 4 - Due Friday, 1/30. Reading Log to be signed each night to check that each student has read for 30 minutes per day. 
We will choose new independent reading books next week.
3. Shelf Works - a) 2 Cursive Cards
b) Completed Grammar Album - N-1 through N-8 - due Friday, 1/30
4. Interactive Notebook to be completed for pages 71 - 79.
5. Group A - Homework - Assigned reading 65 - 70 in Alchemist - Answer questions. Due Monday at the latest.
6. Group A - POP-UP Questions Packet - p. 71 - 79. Due Friday 1/30.
7. GrouP A - Grade 8 - Suffixes/Prefixes Packet Due 2/6

Homework by Day:
Monday
Today we had a make-up day. 2nd Marking Period work was returned. Grades to be entered beginning tomorrow. Report cards will be going home February 13th.
Tomorrow we will be taking the district ELA midterm. There will be not Interactive Notebook today or tomorrow night for homework. Students should use this as an opportunity to catch up on old Interactive Notebooks and/or other classwork assignments. 

Worklist for Week of January 12 - 16: (SEE HOMEWORK BELOW AS WELL)

1. Group A - R.E.V. Vocabulary quiz on Monday - will count twice. Study! 
2. Group B - Current Event - Due Friday
3. Shelf Work - In grammar album, you should be completing N-3, N-4 to stay on pace. If you have not completed N-1, N-2, you should also plan to get that done so you are not bogged down.
4. Shelf Work - 2 cursive cards
5. Independent Reading for 30 minutes every night and have reading log signed. Your independent reading is due on January 30. 
6. Donor's Choose letter - Due Friday, January 16. Group A - to be explained Tuesday.
7. Great American Mail Race - Due Date to be determined. To be explained in both classes. 
8. Every day we read The Alchemist, students are responsible for answering in their Interactive Notebook questions 1 through 5 and copying into their notebook any vocabulary put on the board for that day. 

Homework:
Monday
1. Group A & B - read The Alchemist in class. Answer your I.N. questions. We said that if you did not finish you Interactive Notebook questions, including the pop question (Would you go after the treasure? Why or why not?), that it becomes your homework. 
2. Have your reading log signed after you read for 30 minutes. 

Tuesday
1. Read the photocopy of The Alchemist pages 21 - 32. Respond in your Interactive Notebook (I.N.) to your 5 questions. This may replace your 30 minutes of reading tonight in your independent reading ONLY IF you are on pace and can afford to miss a night. 
2. Have your reading log signed. 

Wednesday
1. Journal Prompt: What is your dream? What do you want more than anything else in the whole world. 
2. Independent Reading for 30 minutes - have reading log signed. 
3. Check your notebooks. Do you have every AIM, activator? 

Thursday
1. Finish reading Part 1 of The Alchemist tonight using the photocopy. Answer your I.N. questions. Your Interactive Notebook Pop-Question is "What is the conflict / What are the conflicts in The Alchemist?" Remember, a conflict does not have to be an "argument." It can be a challenge or an obstacle the main character has to overcome. Due tomorrow! 
Pop-Up Questions:
1. Find any vocabulary you do not know. Define. At least 3! Put the page where you found the word next to it.
2. Remember ABSOLUTE LOCATION from the beginning of the year in Mr. Murdock's class? Find the absolute location of the City of Tangier. Locate it on a map or an atlas. Where in Africa is it? North? Southeast? Where??
3. What are some omens the boy Santiago thinks are omens? Find a line in the text. Define "omen."
4. Draw a picture of Tangier using Santiago's description. Include many details!

2. Because it is so short, this will not take the place of your independent reading tonight. Sorry! Still have to read for 30 minutes and have your reading log signed! :)
3. Have your notebook ready to hand-in by tomorrow! 

Friday
1. Today with Group A, we will be comparing WEX to the MCAS long composition. Students should finish their essay if they have not finished in class. There is no REQUIRED independent reading over the long weekend. 

Worklist for Week of January 5 - 9:
  1.  Group A - R.E.V. Packet is due on Monday, January 12. Vocabulary index cards are due Wednesday, January 7.  
  2. Group B - Current Event is due on Friday, January 9.
  3. Shelf Work (Independent Work - to be completed in class): Grammar Album - Pages N-1, N-2: Due Friday, January 9. Keep track of your grammar album using your Track sheet (which should be kept in your ELA section of your binder!) 
  4. Shelf Work: 2 Cursive cards, front and back.
  5. We are currently reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho in class. It is each student's responsibility to answer their assigned questions in their Interactive Notebook and define any vocabulary given.
  6. Independent reading each day for 30 minutes. Each student should have already chosen a fourth independent reading book for this month. The expectation is to read Monday through Friday for 30 minutes each night. Monday through Thursday, parents/guardians should sign off on their child's reading log to ensure their child actually read. The next independent reading book should be completed with their independent reading card done by January 30. 
  7. Reading Log for this week is due January 9. 
  8. Notebooks for the 2nd marking period will be collected on Friday, January 16.
*Remember all Classwork becomes homework if unfinished.
Homework: 
1. Journal Prompt - Assigned 1/8 - Due on 1/9. In your journal, write a letter convincing Santiago's father to let him travel. Use evidence from the text to support your persuasion.
