School ends at 3:15 with the last bus leaving at 3:30 ![]() Reading: Students have a reading assignment nightly. Students are asked to read their weekly story several times a week. This allows an emerging reader to feel really comfortable with the text and enables the listener (parent) to hear and correct any miscues. At school we are working on various phonics, and comprehension issues. Often, we use other materials to compliment the text. Please feel free to contact me if you have concerns regarding your child's progress in reading. Vocabulary: Quizzes are on-going throughout the year. Words are drawn from word families(ending in rhyme) and from the 100 sight words first graders should know by years end. These words (in list form) can be found in the First Grade brochures and in your child's homework folder. Phonics: We continue to do phonics lessons and games. We apply these lessons to our reading across the curriculum. Spelling: Our weekly spelling list is derived from both phonics standards and our sight words. I believe that by relating spelling to students' weekly work they will be more successful. ![]() Writing First graders, countywide, are preparing for a writing skills test in March. In class we are writing daily across the curriculum. We are looking for good writers who can: *Use upper/lower case letters correctly *Use punctuation (periods, question marks) where needed *Write a "story" which answers the prompt using five sentences. It should be written sequentially and make sense to the reader. *Spelling should include both inventive and standard spelling. In order to help your student at home, you may wish to have them write for you and check these goals. The Spring skills test should not be a stressful situation. Rather, it is intended as an opportunity to assess writing growth and prepare students for more challenging work in future grades. ![]() need to continue to practice math facts and be ready to solve addition and subtraction problems (0 to 10) automatically. This is readily accomplished through practice, both at home and school. |
