UNRAAVEL
U = Underline the title
N = Now predict the passage
R = Run through and number the paragraphs
A = Are you reading the questions?
A = Are the important words circled?
              (write down their meaning)
V = Venture through the passage
E = Eliminate the obviously wrong answers
L = Let the questions be answered!
     (write the paragraph # and line # where 	you found the answer)

Please encourage your child to use the UNRAAVEL method when they are reading! 

The 12 Power Words
Trace = List in steps
Analyze = Break apart
Infer = Read between the lines
Evaluate = Judge
Formulate = Create
Describe = Tell all about 
Support = Back up with details
Explain = Tell how
Summarize = Give me the short 
			version
Compare = All the ways they are alike
Contrast = All the ways they are 			different
Predict = What will happen next

Self-selected reading is just one strategy we use to improve reading comprehension. Self-selected reading is when the child chooses something that is of interest to them to read. Hopefully, if they are interested, they will read. They may read novels, short stories, articles, cartoons,or comic books. The point is...READ! The more we read the better readers we become!
