3rd Grade- Room 401

A few reminders:

- Please be sure to check your child's agenda EVERYDAY. Important information regarding your child's performance and behavior will be written here. Their daily behavior points will be written under the date. Also, the students write their nightly homework here every morning so they know what is expected of them.

- Please encourage your students to read for 20 minutes on a daily basis. I do not incorporate this as homework for the students, but they know that nightly reading will help them to improve their comprehension, fluency, and intonation. Ask your child questions after they are done reading to check for comprehension. I find that the 5 W's are a quick and easy way to check for this.

- Remember that the Thursday folder will come home every Thursday with your child. If your child is absent or we do not have school, then the folder will come home the next school day. There will be papers that need your attention in the 'Keep at Home' side. The 'Return to School' side is all of your child's graded work from the past week. Please look through these, talk about them with your child, and send back to school the next day. I keep a folder for each student that holds all of their completed work from the year. If you have ANY questions about a paper, progress, etc do not hesitate to come in, call me, or email me. Remember, I am here for the students and want to do all I can to ensure they are successful.

January 2011

Math:

We are finishing our unit on data and graphing as well as continuing with multiplication. Students are learning their count-by's through 12 as well as different strategies for finding the answer to a multiplication problem. These include drawing groups or pictures, repeated addition, using count-by's, and basic memorization. Please challenge your child to practice their multiplication facts on a daily basis. I will be providing flashcards on this School Notes page for further practice. Students are creating their own flashcards at school to practice with during 'down time' when they find themselves with nothing to do. We are also continuing to spiral back through previous math concepts to ensure we don't forget them!

Reading: We are beginning our new theme: Incredible Stories this month. This is usually a favorite among students. We will be: discussing what makes a story incredible, inferencing, sequencing, analyzing story parts, reading for fluency, and comparing characters. Students are continuously encouraged to think about the stories before, during, and after reading to ensure understanding.

Social Studies: We are finishing our unit on Citizenship. Students are learning how to be good citizens in all communities: school, home, their neighborhood, city, etc. They have been very creative and created a Keynote presentation of how to show good citizenship at school. Our unit guides us into discussing community leaders as well as holidays and celebrations.

Science: Students are beginning a unit on Earth/Moon/Planets/Stars. Lessons will be geared towards the different moon phases, comparing and contrasting the different planets, and what constellations are. Students will create their own constellations in class and complete an at-home project in which they create a model of their favorite planet.

Grammar: We are continuing to discuss verbs, inflected endings, spelling patterns, and subject-verb agreement.

Writing: Students are finishing their Trickster Tales (they did an awesome job!) and we are going to continue work on personal narratives. We are focusing on staying on one topic as well as having a logical beginning, middle, and end. If time permits the students have asked about writing their own Incredible Story to coincide with our Reading Theme.

A Few Other Things

- Students are continuing to work towards their A.R. and A.M. goals. We are also Star testing to determine their new levels for next quarter.

- We recently took a field trip to Horizons Unlimited. The students had a blast learning about the Earth, Sun, and Moon as well as becoming scientists trying to determine the best way to pollinate flowers to help save a farm.

- Students will be taking their second Children's Progress test. This test helps us to determine where students are struggling as well as where they are succeeding. We will compare their second scores to those from the start of the year to look at the progress made.

- The Science Fair is Thursday January 13th after school. Our class is finishing our project and it will be submitted for the Thursday judging.

- We will be beginning our IMPACT project this month as well. Students will be choosing a city to research via Internet and creating a flyer advertising their findings.

- The end of the second grading period is January 22th. Report cards will be issued February 2nd.

- Please feel free to contact me at anytime. You can call the school to set up a conference (704-216-0273) or email me (farzalocl@rss.k12.nc.us). I check my email on a daily basis and will be glad to set up a time to speak with you. Remember, I am here to help in any way that I can. As always, thank you for all YOU do as well to help your child succeed. =)
