SCALE Mr. Gerry SteedleySecond Chance Alternative Learning EnvironmentThe SCALE program seeks to teach students to change aggressive and inappropriate behaviors and to increase academic achievement through behavior modification. Program Goals 1. Place consistently disruptive, uncooperative students in an alternative setting within the school, preventing long-term suspension and allowing the student an opportunity to learn how to change negative behaviors. 2. Teach students appropriate behaviors and relationship skills that will allow successful re-entry into the regular classroom. Program Focus / Character 1. Perspective, points of view in dealing with conflict. 2. Self-control, managing emotions and words. 3. Empathy, seeing more than my own interest. 4. Decision, from what i feel to what I do. 5. Truth, from what I am to what I will be. Program Goals / Academics 1. Maintain, monitor, and advance the student's academic education. 2. Maintain and advance communication with regular classroom teachers. 3. Use community mentors to assist in areas of their expertise. My purpose as the SCALE teacher is to intervene. Self-control is a learned skill. Being responsible is a learned behavior. The concepts of positive behavior and decision-making must be taught. Intervention requires teaching and teaching requires correction. My job is not to punish or be mean to SCALE students. Corrections will result in the loss of reward and privilege, and occasionally students reject the idea that behavior and consequences go together. I will attempt to get between the student and their bad behaviors, teach them how to think about conflict, how to communicate their thoughts and feelings, and how to decide what to do. Their successful re-entry into class and relationship with others depends on our succeeding together while the student is assigned to SCALE.ParentsWeekly Reports will be sent home for parents to sign and return. These reports will include weekly grades and behavior. Parents will be keep informed of student progress in all areas. Parents are welcome to schedule a conference or visit.
