Course Description:The following units will be covered during the nine-week course: Mental Health and Wellness, Safety, Violence Prevention, Fitness, Nutrition, Substance Abuse including: marijuana, street drugs, tobacco and alcohol, and Human Sexuality. Goals and objectives for students with an Individual Education Plan will be addressed in the course.
Assessment:A total nine-week average will be calculated in the following manner: · 20%- Human Sexuality workbook, quizzes, and parent interviews · 10%- Dressing Out and completing state-required fitness testing · 10%- Alcohol Unit · 10%- Tobacco Unit · 10%- Drug Unit · 10%- Mental Health Unit · 10%- Fitness Unit · 10%- Nutrition Unit · 10%- Homework and Classwork (Each unit will consist of an assessment, packet, and life application activity.) Provisions for Improving Grades:According to the Fulton County Board of Education, “Students who have a low (73 or below) or a failing cumulative grade may ask the teacher for opportunities to improve their grade when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements, including attendance.”
Attendance Make-up Procedure:Upon returning to school following an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher to request make-up work. The student must complete make-up work within the time specified by the teacher. (The student will be given the same amount of time they were absent to make-up the work unless other arrangements are mutually agreed upon).
Turning in Assignments late: Any work received after the assigned due date will result in a grade reduction. If a student has a printing and/or computer problem, they need to turn in the assignment handwritten with a signed note from a parent or guardian stating the problem. There are no exceptions unless the student has an excused absence the day the assignment is due. In this case, the student must turn in the assignment when they return to school.
Classroom Procedures and Expectations: Students are expected to follow five basic rules: 1. Be on time. 2. Be prepared with paper, pen/pencil, assignments and agenda. 3. Follow directions. 4. Stay on task. 5. Be respectful of self, classmates and teacher at all times.
If the student does not follow one or more of these rules, it can and may result in one or more of the following: note in the agenda for parent to sign, phone call or e-mail to parent and/or private detention. If the behavior continues after the student has served private detention, it may result in an office referral.
