PHYSICAL EDUCATION SYLLABUS
The Physical Education staff warmly welcomes you to
The PE department believes in the participation of all students in a wide variety of physical activities during the middle school experience. The curriculum is designed to offer a broad spectrum of activities including team sports, individual sports, fitness and adventure activities. All activities have significant worth; however, not all students will enjoy the same activities. Thus, in designing the curriculum, we have created a program in which every student will find a favorite activity.
The basic objective of the Physical Education department is to encourage each student to develop a lifestyle based on healthy behaviors. In order to be healthy, students must possess an acceptable level of physical fitness - not athletic fitness, but rather health related fitness. Appropriate stretching and warm-up activities will be done daily prior to the day’s main activity.
We expect all middle school students to be able to fulfill the following responsibilities:
1. Bring to class each day: A. Your school agenda B. P.E. uniform and lace-up sneakers 2. Change clothing every day for Physical Education class. 3. Practice self-control at all times. 4. Respect the rights and feelings of all students and teachers. 5. Be on time. 6. Participate in all activities.
It is strongly preferred that you wear the WBMS Physical Education uniform to class. You are required to wear a gray/white t-shirt and royal blue shorts to PE each day, so purchasing a WBMS PE uniform is your best option. Sweats may be worn to PE if needed during cooler weather. You need to come to school each day prepared to dress out for Physical Education class. Students who do not dress out for any reason will not participate in physical activity
Students will be issued a PE lock and locker during PE class. If a student’s lock is lost, stolen or damaged, it is the student’s responsibility to replace the lock at a cost of five dollars. Students are NOT to share lockers or give out locker combinations to other students.
GRADING
Students will receive a daily participation grade in Physical Education. Students are expected to participate to the best of their ability during all activities. Points may be deducted for lack of effort and/or participation. The students will earn a weekly participation grade (100 pts. per week). Participation will count for 70% of the total grade.
Students are required to complete at least one written assignment every nine weeks. Written work and tests will count for 10% of the total grade. The individual PE teacher will assign these.
The Students will participate in 2 fitness days per week. They will receive a weekly fitness grade that reflects their efforts on these days. Fitness will count for 20% of their grade. Students are permitted to bring Ipods or other MP3 players to PE on fitness days only. They are to keep them locked in their school locker until PE and return them to their school locker after PE. Students are solely responsible for the protection of their devices.
Goals and objectives for students with an Individual Education Plan will be addressed in the course.
ABSENCES:
You must make up ALL Physical Education absences. Make-up work can be accomplished by turning in a written note from a parent or coach validating 30 minutes of physical activity outside of school. (This can include Intramural attendance.)
All make-up work should be completed within one week of the absence. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate with the teacher in regard to making up an absence.
CONDUCT: A separate grade of E, S, N, or U will be given for conduct. The PE staff follows the school-wide discipline steps. A student’s conduct grade will be lowered upon the assignment of a detention. Minor conduct offenses will be dealt with on a three-step plan:
1. Conference with student 2. Parental contact 3. Private detention (conduct grade will be lowered)
Major conduct offenses will automatically be referred to the main office (resulting in a lower conduct grade).
Teacher/Parent Communication:
Please feel free to get in touch with your child’s PE teacher with any questions or concerns by contacting the front office at 770-667-2940, or by e-mail: brannond@fultonschools.org; candelarioa@fultonschools.org; kolkkas@fultonschools.org; martinnancy@fultonschools.org; meenan@fultonschools.org; schulere@fultonschools.org; or sell@fultonschools.org.
