Welcome to Music Faith Elementary students and parents!

We've had an incredible first week at  Faith Elementary.  The children are so enthusiastic and we are happy to see their smiling faces!

For all grade levels, we begin the year with rules and procedures this week.  Most have also had the time to talk about steady beat or pulse in music.  This includes feeling and moving to the beat of various musical pieces, finding the beat in songs that we sing, and in the next two weeks, doing organized dance steps to the beat of songs.

This will lead into a more complex study of rhythm and rhythm notes, as the semester progresses, and for fourth and fifth graders, we will quickly transfer this knowledge to the recorder.

In addition to learning how to read rhythm in music, they will learn music has form, or pattern.  Not only will they be able to  hear the different sections in the music, but the children will be able to see how patterns repeat in musical pieces.

The most important part of music class in the beginning is getting the children excited about coming to music class, and most of them seem very happy when they walk through the door! Another focus will be music around the world, focusing on the schoolwide theme of "Read Around the World in 180 days!"

Fourth and fifth graders will be starting recorder soon, so parents, please encourage your child to practice at home (even if it is a little hard on the ears at first!)

Fifth graders--

You have lots of things to look forward to:

Once again, fifth grade will prepare and present the December PTA program.  They also are preparing to play recorder and sing at the NC Symphony concert in the spring.  AND about ten percent of the fifth grade will be chosen to represent Faith Elementary in the Rowan County Fifth Grade Honors Chorus.

As always, my goal is for our children to be music makers, not  just listeners, and they must learn the basics of music reading to do this.  This is a building process, that starts in kindergarten and progresses throughout their lives.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to teach your children.  They make coming to work a joy every day.

And thank you for supporting the music program at Faith Elementary!

Sincerely,

Lucy Shue
