Welcome to 5th Grade

Greetings to all students and parents. My name is Mr. Rhoades and I would like to thank you for visiting my School Notes page. You are, by now, aware of the 5th grade rotation schedule. I am your child's math teacher for one of the three rotations. If you have any questions concerning math, please email me at rhoadesj@wilkes.k12.nc.us, and I will respond as soon as possible.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Talent Show                          Thursday, May 7th

Reading Counts Deadline:     Thursday, May 14

Reading Counts

Each student will have an individual Reading Counts goal to reach for the 4th quarter, in addition to the 80% average they must acheive. The school reward for those students who reach their goal will be a day trip to Herring Ridge for swimming and water sliding. Students will be bringing home Friday reports all during the 4th nine weeks.  They should be well aware of how many points they need to make their goals.

Donations

Your donations are always gladly accepted. Items that are in demand include: Kleenex, paper towels, gallon, quart, and snack size zipper bags, Crayola markers, Expo dry erase markers, and gift cards for Walmart and Staples.

HOMEWORK FOLDERS

At the beginning of the year, the 5th grade teachers purchased each 5th grader a black homework folder. These folders serve to help your student stay organized. The folders may contain the following: FORMS that need to be signed and returned to school, GRADED WORK, announcements/reminders of upcoming school functions, and notes from the teacher. PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD'S FOLDER EACH AND EVERY NIGHT.  Thanks for supporting me in the communication process.

    Subject Areas

In math, our ASU interns will be doing a review unit on fraction concepts such as finding greatest common factor and least common multiple, reducing fractions to simplest form, finding equivalent fractions, and adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. In addition to the class lessons and activities, I would highly encourage your child to practice these skill using problems from the math text book and playing the LCM/GCF game on their PDAs.

Spelling scores have been a concern of late, but seem to be on the rise. Please note that spelling homework is usually assigned on Mondays and Thursdays with a test on Friday. While I encourage the students to do their homework on the PDA, I have no problems with paper and pencil homework every now and then.

Reading tests are given on Friday as well. Your child is given time at school to read the selection and do the assignments, but the selection is to be reread on Thursday night. All tests are open book.

  School Supplies

We have seen that many students have lost or misplaced school supplies. This is a good time to ask your students if they are missing anything and refurbish any needed supplies. Below is a list of things they should have.  We are not suggesting that you buy all new supplies just replace those that they cannot be found.

                        -Three ring binder

-zip pouch to fit in the binder

                        -loose leaf paper

                        -pencils

                        -scissors

                        -colored pencils

Snacks

I provide time for a morning snack around 9am each morning. However, snack is a privelege, not a right. I routinely continue to teach as the students enjoy their snacks, but expect them to stay focused on the math lesson. I rely heavily on donated snacks, unfortunately those donations have been scarce. I provide a snack to any student who politely request it on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Please help out by donating snacks for our class. Thanks.

I hope you found the above information helpful. Always check your child's black homework folder for graded work, newsletters, and other documents that may require a parent signature. Please continue to visit my site for further updates. Thank you for supporting your child's education.
