![]() Welcome to a new semester! All classes are beginning with the basics in order to catch those who have not had art before up to the ones who have. Before I can teach them how to draw, I have to teach them how to see. We are talking a good deal about brain research and how the two hemispheres of the brain work together but work differently. In order to demonstrate the differences, we are copying line drawings of the masters upside down and trying to block the left brain tendency to label everything. This is a tough concept for a lot of the kids and of course they all think I'm goofy, but it works. We are working on a writing assignment to articulate the kids' personal definitions of art. They are grouped into seven teams and are helping each other brainstorm, edit, and create their documents which will be displayed in the hall. In the next few days, we will change from copying master works to drawing objects which are right in front of them. This is a major jump for the "left-brainers" in the group. We'll get them through it. Trying to grasp the difference between sight and perception is a tough concept even for most adults, but vital for the production of artwork. |
