We are currently reading the novel Out of the Dust. It is a historical fiction novel. TH etime period is set in th e1930's during the depression and the Dust Storm. We have done a lot of prep work to get ready to read this book. THe students seem very interested in the characters lives and are making connections between themselves and the main character.

We have also been reading EOG passages and using the unraavel strategy on each passage. We have talked about how to eliminate the answer choices and taking our time on each reading passage. 

Students have been asked to complete a reading log each week but they may use some of there EOG passages as there reading material if they do not want to read their book. I encourage the parents to help them with the EOG passages if they will. Just keep reassuring them that the strategies help and to use them. Have them teach you how to use them? You may sign the log or the EOG passage. Some of them may loose their reading log or leave it at school so this a suggestion so they can still get there credit.
