  2nd Grade Homework

Reading Homework

Each night, students must read for 20 minutes and record the title, author, and number of pages they read.  Please do this in your spelling journal. In their homework journals, students should complete the following reading assignments each week:

Monday:

Look at the title of your story/chapter.  Take a picture walk.  Think about the part of the story you have already read.  Write down a prediction about what will happen in your reading tonight.  After you read, write down whether or not your prediction ended up happening.

Tuesday:

As you read, think about connections that you can make to your own life, otehr stories you have read, or to things going on in the world.  Write down any connections that you make as you read.  Label them as Text-to-Self, Text-to-Text, or Text-to-World.

Wednesday:

As you read, think about the most important words that you are reading in the story.  Write these key words down in your journal.  Are any of them new to you?  Use context clues or a dictionary to figure out any words that you do not know.

Thursday:

Write a summary of what you read tonight.  Remember that a summary does not include every single detail, but tells the most important parts of the selection.  Make sure that you tell what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of what you read.

June Spelling Assignments

Monday

Use your spelling words in QUESTION SENTENCES (you may use more than one word in each sentence).  UNDERLINE YOUR WORDS!

Tuesday

Write your spelling words in alphabetical order (a-z).  Then write them in reverse alphabetical order (z-a).

Wednesday

Use your spelling words to write a paragraph about things you have learned and done since you have been in second grade.  You may use two or three words in the same sentence.  Include things you have done at home, at school, or somewhere else.  UNDERLINE YOUR WORDS!

Thursday

Write each of your spelling words once in print and once in cursive.  Circle your neatest word in print and your neatest word in cursive.  Then, study your spelling words.  Have a parent or helper give you a pretest on your words.
