  • List all of the cylinders, spheres, cubes, cones, rectangular prisms, and pyramids that you can find in your house.
  • Cut out a triangle from paper.  Trace it in your journal.  Slide the triangle, flip it, and turn it.  Trace the shape after each movement.  Label each movement.

Writing

Chosse one assignment to complete in your journal each day from this list:

  • Write a short story about a snowy day.
  • Write an acrostic poem about snow.  The first line should start with S, the second with N, the third with O, and the last with W.
  • Imagine that you are a snowflake.  Describe what your trip from the cloud to the ground is like.  What happens to you after you land on the ground?
  • Make as many words from the letter in "SNOWY DAY" as you can.  You can only use each letter once in a word (except y - you can use two of those!)
  • Write a letter to a friend or relative telling them about your adventures in the snow.  Be sure to use correct letter form!
  • Write a list of at least ten snowy day words in your neatest cursive.
  • Create a cartoon about a snowy day.  It should have at least 3 parts and include words for each part.
  • Cook something with an older family member.  Write the recipe neatly in your journal.  Be sure to number the steps or use order words so that someone else can follow your recipe.

Reading Homework

Each night, students must read for 20 minutes and record the title, author, and number of pages they read.  Please do this in your spelling journal. In their homework journals, students should complete the following reading assignments each week:

Monday:

Look at the title of your story/chapter.  Take a picture walk.  Think about the part of the story you have already read.  Write down a prediction about what will happen in your reading tonight.  After you read, write down whether or not your prediction ended up happening.

Tuesday:

As you read, think about connections that you can make to your own life, otehr stories you have read, or to things going on in the world.  Write down any connections that you make as you read.  Label them as Text-to-Self, Text-to-Text, or Text-to-World.

Wednesday:

As you read, think about the most important words that you are reading in the story.  Write these key words down in your journal.  Are any of them new to you?  Use context clues or a dictionary to figure out any words that you do not know.

Thursday:

Write a summary of what you read tonight.  Remember that a summary does not include every single detail, but tells the most important parts of the selection.  Make sure that you tell what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of what you read.
