I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Schoolnotes page for Mr. Harvey Lipshutz - 6th Grade World History.



Please check this page often for class schedule, assignments, due dates, as well as general school information. I will update this page each week for the coming week's activities.

I was very pleased to see so many excited parents and students at Open House on Friday. I am looking forward to a very successful and rewarding school year. I think you will all really enjoy this class.

Week of August 22, 2011. 

Monday, August 22nd - First day of a new adventure for all of us.  Today will be mostly getting acquainted, classroom and school procedures.

Tuesday, August 23rd - Code of Conduct video.  Print and sign P. 7,8,9 from online Code of Conduct.  Please return by Thursday.

Wednesday, August 24th - Students will become acquainted with the textbook.  There will be a short Textbook Scavenger Hunt activity once textbooks are sent home.

Thursday - Friday, August 25th & 26th - "Tools of the Trade" Activity.  A short group activity for students to learn skills necessary to help with the study of history.


Hope everyone had a good first week.  All my classes are outstanding and if the first week is like all the rest, it will be a great year.
Week of August 29 - September 2, 2011
Monday, August 29th - Groups will continue to work on their "Tools of the Trade" activity.
Tuesday thru Friday - Groups to present their activities.  Activity located at the bottom of this page.  Lessons should be written, visual, and involve the class.  We will make a schedule for presentations on Monday.

Week of September 5 - 9, 2011
Monday, Sept. 5th - No School - Labor Day
Tuesday, Sept. 6th - Students will receive 1st quarter project, Current events/This Date in History on-going homework assignment, and Note-Taking Guide.  If time permits, begin reading and note-taking for Chapter 1, Section 1.
Wed., Sept. 7th - Complete reading and notes for chapter 1, section 1.
Thursday, Sept. 8th - Compare Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages.
Friday, Sept. 9th - Begin study of the first civilization - the Sumerians located in Mesopotamia.  This will also be our DEAR day.

Week of September 12 - 16, 2011
Monday - Wednesday - Benchmark Assessment Test.  Students report to 1st period, then to testing center for the rest of 1st, then all of 2nd, 5th, and 6th periods.  3rd and 4th periods are normal.  Please bring sharpened #2 pencils and a book to read for after testing.

Thursday, Sept. 15th - Back to regular classes.  Watch Ancient Mesopotamia video and short quiz.
Friday, Sept. 16th - Read and take notes - Chapter 1, Section 2.
Chapter 1 test will be Wed. or Friday, Sept. 21st or 23rd. Thursday in an Early Release Day.
Current Events/This Date in History are due BY Sept. 19th and K.I.S.S. project due Sept. 26th.


Week of September 19 - 23, 2011

Monday, Sept. 19th - Finish reading and notes chapter 1, section 2.  Complete comprehension questions from section 2.  Current Events and This Date in History due.

Tuesday, Sept. 20th - Reading and notes - chapter 1, section 3.  The First Empires.

Wednesday, Sept. 21st - Review for chapter 1 test (Jeopardy game?)

Thursday, Sept. 22nd - Early Release - Students report to periods 1,2,3,4. 

Friday, Sept. 23rd - Chapter 1 Test

K.I.S.S. Project due Monday.


Week of September 26 - 30, 2011
Monday, Sept. 26th - K.I.S.S. Project due today.  Share your place and your creative activity.  Write a song?  Be prepared to perform in front of the class.  If time, start on Chapter 2, Ancient Egypt
Tuesday, Sept. 27th - Video and short quiz on Ancient Egypt.  Homework - Bring chapter 2 notes.
Wednesday, Sept. 28th - Reading and notes - chapter 2, section 1.  Importance of the Nile River.
Thursday, Sept. 29th - No School
Friday, Sept. 30th - Continue reading and notes - Chapter 2.

Week of October 3 - 7, 2011 - Continue Study of Ancient Egypt
Monday, Oct. 3rd - Hieroglyphic Writing
Tuesday - Oct. 4th - Chapter 2, section 3 - Reading and notes - Egyptian Middle and New Kingdoms
Students will attend assembly 6th period describing our only schoolwide fundraiser of the year - Flight of the Falcons.  Please contribute to this fundraiser.  PTA does so much for our students throughout the year.  Thank you.
Wednesday, Oct. 5th - Mr. Mummy video - Questions to answer from video
Thursday, Oct. 6th - Make a mummy and write about a pharaoh from Ancient Egypt (in hieroglyphics, of course).  Dates for certain activities may change due to video availability.
Friday, Oct. 7th - Introduce History Fair Project.  The DEAR.  Please look at links for this activity.  These can be found at school website, then students, then History Fair.
Week of October 10 - 14, 2011
Monday, Oct. 10th - Students to complete their mummies and write short biography of the pharaoh of their choice.
Tuesday, Oct. 11th - Finish mummies and research for history fair.
Wednesday, Oct. 12th - Review for Chapter 2 Test.
Thursday, Oct. 13th - Chapter 2 Test - Ancient Egypt (changed from Wednesday)
Friday, Oct. 14th - Begin Chapter 3 - Ancient Israelites.
6th grade dance - 4:30 - 6:30.  Pay with dance form during lunch.  Flight of the Falcons - please help with our only fundraiser.  $25.00 to participate in the carnival.

Week of October 17 - 21, 2011
Monday, Oct. 17th - Return K.I.S.S. Project.  Begin Chapter 3 - Ancient Israelites.  Bring chapter 3 notes.  Read and notes chapter 3, section 1.
Tuesday, Oct. 18th - Laptops available for research for History Fair.  Contracts and topics due Thursday.
Wed., Oct. 19th - Reading and notes chapter 3, section 2
Thurs., Oct. 20th - Reading and notes chapter 3, section 3
Friday, Oct. 21st - Questions from chapter 3.

Monday, Oct. 31st - Yes, it is Halloween.  But this is middle school, so no costumes.  We will begin Chapter 6 (yes, 6).  Please bring chapter 6 notes - Ancient India.  Reading and notes for chapter 6, Section 1.
Tuesday, Nov. 1st - Chapter 6, section 2 - Hinduism and Buddhism.
Wed., Nov. 2nd - Continue on Hinduism and Buddhism - comprehension and comparison.
Thurs, Nov. 3rd - Chapter 6, section 3 - India's empires.
Friday, Nov. 4th - DEAR; Flight of the Falcons.  Not many other major plans with these events today.  Catch up on notes; work on History Fair.  Please contribute to Flight of the Falcons.  Money will still be accepted.  I have forms and envelopes.

Bring chapter 5 notes!  This week each day will be about the same - reading and notes for chapter 5, and sharing of History fair projects.  Chapter 5 will start with section 3 on Monday.
Renaissance Festival field trip - payment by cash or online  Monday thru Thursday.

Thursday, March 29th - Early Release.  Periods 5,6,3,4.  Students will be completing quarterly reflections.
Note on grades:  all assignments have been posted; Rome project grades will be up later this week.  If you have a blank space for an assignment, that means I do not have it from you and it will be a "0".  An "X" means excused from this assignment.  The only blank space now should be Rome Project.
Welcome to the 4th Quarter of 6th Grade
Monday - Wednesday, April 2-4:  Students will be working to compare all the religions that have been covered this year.  They will be looking at several areas to compare.  Individual or partner assignment. Laptops in class Tuesday.  Bring money for the Book Fair.
Thursday, April 5th - Brief videos on the Middle Ages. Students select which location during the Middle Ages they want to focus on.  More details to follow later in the week.  No school Friday.

Week of April 9 - 13, 2012
Monday, April 12 - Groups assigned for Middle Ages.  Start planning your lesson and activity.
Tuesday, April 10 - Continue working on Middle Ages.  Laptops available today.
Wed. - Fri. - Work on Middle Ages lesson or selected supplementary readings on Middle Ages topics (depending on when I can get laptops).  Next week - FCAT begins.  We will resume work on Middle Ages after FCAT.  With all FCAT interruptions, first Middle Ages presentation scheduled for April 30th.

Final Exam - Tuesday, June 5th.  Study guide by next Monday.

Monday, May 21st - Renaissance - Exploration and Science.  Chapter 18, Sections 1 and 2.  Final exam study guide. 
Tuesday and Wed., May 22 & 23 - Holocaust video - an abbreviated version of the Anne Frank story.  Students pick their child of the Holocaust.  Biography due Wednesday, May 30th.
Thursday, May 24 - Final Project due.  Work on final exam study guide.  Final exam June 5th.  Study guide due.
Friday, May 25 - No School, teacher planning.
Monday, May 28 - No school, Memorial Day.
