January PE Update

Welcome to 2009 and the third nine weeks. We've been very busy in 6th grade PE classes. We just completed an awesome three week unit on Archery.  Please ask or share with others  the 11 Steps of Archery Success. Archery is a very disciplined sport that provides many opportunities for a lifetime of fun and recreation. Archery is not only fun, it's an Olympic sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and ability levels. Archery is not only fun, it requires focus, technique, concentration, adjustment,  requires little equipment, and can be enjoyed by the entire family.  It helps relieve stress, promotes self improvement, and can be enjoyed for a lifetime competitively or recreationally.  We've been using GENESIS  compound bows and I hope students share their success with their families.  I hope to have an Archery tournament here at RMSA soon and see how we stack up against other schools in our district and the state!

6th grade PE students are currently in a two week unit of health that will focus on body systems. We will be learning about the digestive system, muscular system, skeletal system, and respiratory system. KEEP up with our classwork......the test will not be easy but will come directly from the notes we take in class!!!

Please keep your activity logs updated.  EXERCISE YOUR BODY as well as your mind. If you don't take care of yourself ...where will you live?  Activities that are logged should be aerobic in nature, meaning they last 20 minutes with a target heartrate between 120 and 170 beats per minute. If you're keeping active aerobically, your grades will improve, your mile run times will go down, your pacer laps will increase, you'll feel better, look better, sleep better, have more muscle, more endurance, have better skin, burn more calories, and you'll have a stronger heart.

Thanks for your patience on INTOUCH grades!!!

NEWS UPDATE:

Congratulations to our 6th grade PE Students of the MONTH for January.

Austin Richardson and Madison McDowell are sixth grade PE students of the month for the month of January. They lead by example, are team players, are considerate of others, are good listeners, have improved their mile run/pacer times, are always willing to help put, ask good questions, are attentive, organized, and they have an appetite for learning. They help me put PE equipment away, encourage others and  always have a smile on their face. Thank you and congratulations to Austin and Madison.

Activity Log (Homework..hopefully FUN!)

Students have received an activity calendar to log PE homework. (20 minutes of aerobic activity 3 times each week). These calendars/logs will be taken up on Friday for grading. and returned on Tuesday.  If your child is absent on Friday, it is their responsibility to turn it in the next day they attend class. The activity logs should be kept each students PE/Health folder.

3 things should be written/logged in the activity log:

1) Type of activity. Examples of activity include biking, jogging, skate boarding, power walking, aerobics, soccer, cheering, karate, swimming, basketball, etc. If you are playing a sport and have practice after school, you may include that in your agenda. If you are unsure of an activity, please ask me.

2) The amount of time exercising in the activity. It needs to be a minimum of 20 minutes of aerobic activity 3 days each week. Your childs heart rate should be between 125 and 170 (bpm) beats per minute during the activity. This is their Target Heart Rate. Please email me if you have questions.

3) A parent’s initials on each activity.
