NOTE TO PARENTS:
Please read the Science Community Laws below with your child. Be sure to also check your child's agenda daily for complete homework assignments and/or teacher notes. It was so nice to meet those of you that attended Open House on Sept. 17!

When viewing grades, note that "Z" = zero, assignment was never handed in; "0" = assignment was turned in, but was completed incorrectly; "X" = excused from the assignment; a blank or missing score means I have not entered the grade yet.
Students must make up major assignments such as tests, quizzes and lab experiements on TUESDAYS. I give up my personal time in the mornings and during lunch to help the children with their work. Any student may come on these days for extra help too.

****Mrs. Neylon's Science Community Laws****
In this classroom we are all members of the same community. Just like any community, each individual has to work hard at their jobs in order to earn wages. We must ALL follow certain rules. In this science community you are to follow the rules of the Code of Conduct for Walter C. Young Middle School. As your newly appointed mayor of the community, I have instituted some additional laws that will help you to be an outstanding citizen. You are expected to learn and practice these laws whenever in the science community. Each of us has a voice in the way the community is run. If you have comments or concerns, please express them by dropping a note in the suggestion mail box located on my desk.
Community Laws:
1. BE ON TIME when entering the science community! If you are not in your home (assigned seat) by the time the tardy bell rings, you will face consequences.
2. FOLLOW the RULES for safe, proper scientific experimental practice and ALL directions given by your mayor.
3. RESPECT your neighbors in this community, as well as the community as a whole. When someone is talking, listen. (This includes T.V. and speaker announcements.) If the phone rings, please be quiet so the mayor can hear the conversation. If you borrow something, be a good neighbor, and RETURN it. Keep all body parts and other objects to yourself (HBO). Please do NOT deface community property. Clean up after yourself and keep the community looking nice. Respect any community pets.
* There may be live plants and animals in the science community. Please inform the mayor of any allergies or other health concerns.
4. HONOR YOUR ROLE in the science community. Participate in class discussions. Behave properly. Stay positive. Perform any assigned duties to the best of your ability. Your community accepts you how you are; you do not need mirrors, brushes, combs, makeup, etc. Disruptions or disrespectful comments/activities WILL NOT be tolerated.
5. BE PREPARED for your job in the community. Each of you is required to learn and to have the appropriate materials with you every day to perform your job. Most of you will have other assigned responsibilities, too.
6. NO CHEWING GUM, EATING CANDY OR FOOD, OR DRINKING during community meetings (class time) unless given permission by your mayor to do so.
Punishment (Consequences for misbehavior):
First offence: Warning will be given
Second offence: Manual labor = writing assignment
Third offence: Authority will be notified = Letter and phone call home to parent/guardian
Forth offence: Community service = detention will be assigned
Fifth offence: Hard time served = referral will be written, which usually results in LBC
* Referral may be immediate for serious misbehaviors.
Goals:
To provide a creative learning environment, provide varying experiences in the science curriculum to enhance learning, integrate all subjects into the curriculum, incorporate technology into the classroom, perform hands-on lab activities, enhance critical thinking, and provide practices and warm-up activities to help students improve FCAT scores.
GRADING:
Academic grade:
Will depend on number of points scored on the following assignments:
Class activities and participation, homework, quizzes, tests, lab activities, demonstration of safe scientific practices, science journals and lab write-ups, learning log entries and FCAT warm-ups, current event articles, research projects, and science fair written report.
* A total of 20 points extra credit is offered each quarter.
Conduct grade:
Grade is assigned based on behavior and participation in the science community and should be taken seriously. (Science is the only discipline that can deduct academic points due to poor behavior as written in our safety curriculum.)
S = satisfactory N = needs improvement U = unsatisfactory
PROPER COMMUNITY PROCEDURES:
When entering the science community be on time and ready to learn, with all necessary class materials. It is your responsibility to get to your home quickly. Read the board and begin working immediately. If you come into the community late, please sign in on the list located on desk by the door. Go to your seat quietly and read the board to make up any work you missed. Be sure to RECORD HOMEWORK assignments in your planner the FIRST FIVE MINUTES of class time.
Within the science community, you are NOT to get out of your seat without permission. If you need to sharpen your pencil, hold it up in the air and wait for your mayor to point to the sharpener before you get up. If you have a question or need to go to the restroom, please raise your hand. You are allowed four, (4) emergency passes each quarter. When you use one of your passes, you must sign out and write the time you leave the room and the time you return.
If you are absent check the agenda for work you may have missed and take any worksheets from the appropriate bin. Makeup work will be due 2 days following an EXCUSED absence, unless otherwise specified by the mayor. Homework will be checked and reviewed at the beginning of every community meeting. Late homework WILL NOT be accepted. Makeup work for tests, quizzes or laboratory activities due to an EXCUSED absence will be done on TUESDAYS. It is the STUDENTS responsibility to make arrangements with the mayor to come in either before school or during lunch.
If for any reason you finish your class work early, you may read quietly, or do homework. Citizens of the community may use computers with permission from the mayor. Only people assigned to specific jobs are to take part in those jobs. If the assigned employee of a certain task is absent it will be the mayor that will appoint a different person for the day. The sanitation police will be on the lookout for messy members of the community, so please be sure your space is cleaned before you leave or you will be issued a citation. This citation could result in loss of laboratory points. The time keeper will announce the 2-minute warning when there are 2 minutes left of class. At this time you should check that you have recorded homework in your planner, clean up, collect your belongings and sit quietly until you hear the mayor say Have a nice day! THE BELL DOES NOT DISMISS YOU. When exiting the community EVERY chair is to be pushed in and tables straightened.
Folders will be checked RANDOMLY, so it is important to have all required items inside at ALL times. Keep in mind that organization and neatness is a major part of the grade.
Your Science Lab Journal (composition notebook) should reflect your VERY BEST work. Be creative and neat, color graphs, and write in dark blue or black ink.
As payment for your hard work in the community, rewards include Overtime Pay (extra credit), 5 BONUS Points Coupons which can be added to a quiz or test score, Homework Passes, and Free Time Fridays. Individuals may use their earned Bonus Coupons and Homework Passes as they choose. Free Time Fridays (5-10 minutes free time at the end of the week) will be granted to the entire community if EVERY member contributes to a good week. There must be no behavior problems and Quick Reviews or "Exit Passes" must show that science information has been learned. Other awards, such as stickers, pencils, and candy are given periodically.
Chivalry Team Citizen of the Week Award will be nominated by all team teachers, based on attendance, grades and behavior, OR improved attendance, grades and behavior. This is a true honor to receive and a pizza party will be thrown for recipients of the award at the end of the year.
