Knollwood Elementary School Moses Washington EC Teacher Letter to the Parents: An important thing you can do for your child is to model a love for learning at home. You as parents can think collectively with your child to improve their learning at home. You can start by making the most of your home for after school enrichment. Think like a teacher is the first step in making your home an enjoyable learning environment for your child. Here are a few ideas: Put a hundred chart on the refrigerator, put letters, numbers, and sight words on the refrigerator, have the child make a grocery list, put the list in ABC order, practice spelling and math facts while eating dinner, and play scrabble to work on spelling in a fun way. The more ways you help your child learn at home the better his/her understanding of new information will be. Good luck and let me know how these things are helping you at home by dropping me a line via email. Look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks for caring, Mr. Washington Website of the week - www.softschools.com - Use this website to help you strengthen your reading and math skills. Notes from the Teacher:
ENGLISH - For the week of October 24 - 28, students will be working on several reading skills and some classes are using a SRA "Reading Mastery" reading program to strengthen their reading skills. The Reading Mastery Program is a scientific research program on fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The program has over 100 lessons designed to help students improve their reading. Parents - every Friday is spelling day. Students should already have their words for the next two weeks. Each week we practice high frequency words through a variety of activities. A tic tac toe spelling game is copied on the back of the spelling pre-test. Students take home their writing folders every Friday to further practice their spelling words with a test on Monday. If you have questions about spelling Friday, please call me or send me an email. Math, For the week of October 24 - 28, students will be working on math topics 3.1 thru 3.4, adding and subtracting three digit numbers. On Friday, October 21, students will take a math test on topics 2.4 thru 2.10 through our math program - Envision. The Envision Math Program is based on scientific research on how children learn mathematics. We will attempt to take all of our math tests on the computer for several reason(s): assess math skills, maintain accurate data, practice using the computer, and to prepare them to take tests using the computer. If you would like your child to further strengthen their math skills using Envision Math at home, please send me a note and I will send home the instructions as to how to access the program. Parents every Friday is word problem Friday. Students practice solving math word problems through a graphic organizer. The number of problems varies each week depending on what math topic we are working on. Students will have time to work on this in class. http://go.hrw.com/hrw.nd/gohrw_rls1/pKeywordResults?keyword=MT4+HWHelp Save the Date:
