JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS
Two new Discovery Place groups have been started this month. The groups were formed by invitation - one group in 4th grade and one in 5th grade. The students in these groups will be reading stories in the Junior Great Books programs and learning the Shared Inquiry Method of studying a story closely. Shared Inquiry is a distinctive method of learning in which participants search for answers to fundamental questions raised by a text. The questions do not have correct and incorrect answers, but require the reader to interpret the text, to listen to ideas of others, to provide evidence from the story and to come to a conclusion about the questions through discussion. In Shared Inquiry, participants learn to give full consideration to the ideas of others, to weigh the merits of opposing arguments, and to modify their initial opinions as the evidence demands. They gain experience in communicating complex ideas and in supporting, testing, and expanding their own thoughts. In this way, the Shared Inquiry method promotes thoughtful dialogue and open debate, preparing its participants to become able, responsible citizens, as well as enthusiastic, lifelong readers. You can learn more about Junior Great Books at their website which is listed below. Parents are welcome to sit in on a Shared Inquiry discussion. The dates for the discussions will be listed below. Gr. 4: This group meets on days 1 and 3 from 12:15 to 1:00. They will be starting on Friday, 2/6, with the story, Thank You, Ma'am, written by Langston Hughes. The Shared Inquiry discussion for this story will be held on Monday, 2/9, at 12:15 in the Discovery Place room. Gr. 5: This group meets on day 1 from 8:30 to 9:15 and on day 2 from 9:15 to 10:00. They began last Friday working on the story, Charles, by Shirley Jackson. The Shared Inquiry discussion for this story was held on Friday, 2/6, and it will be continued on Thursday, 2/12 at 8:30 in the Discovery Place room. |
