Please send in boxtops so that our school can get money back in the classrooms from all the boxtops we collect! The class collecting the most boxtops will win a class party!

~Let's all make sure we do our part to make sure each student's third grade year is a successful one!~

rd Grade Rocks!

A Note from the Teacher

Please make sure that you continue to check your child's yellow take-home folder daily, so that you can receive information from the school and me.  It is important to check it, so that you can return papers that need to be returned.  Also, look for your child's planner EVERY day and make sure you sign or initial your child's planner EACH day.  They write down their homework in their planner, and I write their behavior for the day so that you can stay informed.  I check the planners daily for your signature or initial.  If their planners are not signed, they receive a number in the behavior book.  I also check for signed planners on Fridays.

Please refer to the Bivings' Bulletin sent home every Monday for details each week.

We will have the listed activities on the following days of the week:

Monday - P.E.

Tuesday - Art

Wednesday - Music

Thursday - Library

Friday - P.E.

Computer Lab - Wednesday

EXCEL - Monday

Please be sure to go over all homework with your child.  It is imperative that the skills are reinforced at home for your child to be successful this year.  Your child will receive a number in the behavior book and a zero if they do not complete assigned homework or incorrect homework. We do not assign meaningless homework throughout the week.  It is truly an extension of our school day.

Please review all papers in folder on the "Keep At Home" side each night.  Sign the Weekly Wrap Up sheet and return test papers with your child on Tuesdays. If you would like more time to review the papers, please just send me a note stating so.

Since we are testing for mastery at the end of each unit, the testing dates may vary each week.  Refer to the website, the weekly newsletter, homework folder, and planner for exact test days.

Look for homework assignments to be written daily by your child in his/her planner, and I will make behavior notations in the planner, as well.  Please check to make sure your child does his/her homework and sign the planner daily AFTER you have checked over all the homework.  Your child will also have a take-home folder.  Please check it daily to find assignments and communication from the school and me.

Thanks to everyone who came to Open House! It was great to see everyone who could make it!  I hope you enjoyed talking with your child about school and our class.

We are really in need of a black ink cartridge for our classroom printer.  It is a HP Deskjet F4180 all in one.  If you happen to be out and about and can pick one up, it would be GREATLY appreciated!

As always, I truly appreciate your support.  It makes a world of difference in the classroom!

From the Office...

When your child is absent, please remember that you will need to send in your child's excuse the day that your child returns to school. Your child will only have 2 days to provide a doctor's excuse this year after the date of absence. Also, please remember, if your child accumulates 5 unexcused tardies or 5 unexcused early check-outs, he/she will receive 1/2 day of IST.

You cannot check out your child after 1:45 p.m. We begin to load buses around that time, and it interferes with our job of getting children safely on their buses.

DON'T FORGET THAT SCHOOL BEGINS AT 7:40 A.M.  Please make sure your child arrives at school on time.  We begin instruction at 7:40 a.m.  Also, please check your student handbook for the absentee and tardy policy. Five tardies will result in a half-day of IST.

ALSO, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT ROLLING BACKPACKS AREN'T ALLOWED THIS YEAR.  THEY ARE A SAFETY ISSUE FOR OUR STUDENTS.  THANKS!

Please send in any used printer ink cartridges, Campbell Soup Labels, Nestle "Go Play" water labels, and Box Tops.  When we turn these in, we get money for much needed resources for our school.  The class earning the most box tops will win a party from the PTO!

If you would like to e-mail me, simply click on the link above, and I will respond as soon as possible. If you would like to be notified when I make changes to the web page, click on the "Notify Me" button at the top of this page, and it will automatically e-mail you when I make changes.

If you have any questions, the easiest way to get in touch with me is by e-mail.  Please feel free to e-mail me at jill.bivings@lamarcountyschools.org or call me at school at (601) 268-3862 for a phone conference or to set up a parent conference.  Thanks!

I am looking forward to another exciting year of learning with your child!

Please check out our school's website at www.littlewarriors.com.  It looks great and is a valuable communication tool between the school and home.

Please remember our district's health policy and send only healthy snacks and drinks to school with your child.  If you're having trouble coming up with healthy snacks, here are some that your child may like:  applesauce cups, Chex mix, fruit cups, Goldfish crackers, string cheese, pickles, fruit or vegetables with dipping sauce, beef jerky, wheat thins, Nilla Wafers, muffins, BAKED chips, yogurt, peanuts, and water is great for the brain and perfect for these HOT days!

If you have lost your school lunch menu, simply go to www.schoolmenu.com to find out what's for lunch.  Click on "Tooned-In School Menu."  Click on "Your School Menu" at the bottom of the page.  When you click on Mississippi and then Lamar County, you will see our monthly lunch menu.  You can also visit www.MyNutrikids.com to create an on-line lunch account for your child.  You can see how much your child has in his/her account and pay online!

For the safety of our students, ALL visitors on the school campus are being asked to go to the office to get a visitor's pass.  A school employee will escort ANYONE walking on campus without a VISIBLE YELLOW visitor's pass to the office.  If you are asked to go to the office to check in, please don't respond by saying that you will  later, or you will just take a second, etc. IT MAKES IT EASIER AND SAFER FOR STUDENTS/STAFF IF EVERYONE WILL FOLLOW THE RULES.  If you come to assist in the classroom, eat lunch with your child, meet for a conference, or just come early to wait for your child's dismissal, please go to the office to get a visitor's pass BEFORE coming to the classroom.  You will need a photo ID to show the office to receive a visitor's pass. EVEN IF YOU THINK STAFF/FACULTY KNOW YOU, YOU MUST STILL GO TO THE OFFICE FOR A PASS!  We are a very large school, and without the visitor's passes and employee badges, it is hard to know who everyone is.  The school staff needs to be aware of people on OGLE's campus at all times.  REMEMBER THIS IS FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD!  Thank you!

Below is a list of items we would like to receive from our class wish list. As always, we appreciate ALL and EVERYTHING that you do.  Nothing goes unnoticed!  We really need more clorox wipes.  I wipe down the desks each day to help prevent the spread of germs.

I  sent home the AR home/connect letter two weeks ago.  This had your child's log in information on it and his/her AR goal for the first nine weeks.  I will be sending home Envision Math usernames and passwords AFTER we take the pretest at school.  We will probably be taking the pretest next week.  You will be able to locate your child's username and password in the front of his/her planner.

Reading:  We will be reading Kumak's Fish  on pages 98-113 this week.  We will be focusing on sequencing and unknown words, these skills can be reviewed on pp. 92-97 in our reader.  On Wednesday night, the students will complete a sequencing worksheet.  For the other nights of the week, I simply ask that your child read for 20 minutes.  It can be their story or an AR book that they read for enjoyment.  ON Thursday, we will take our Fresh Reads test and on Friday, we will take a test on the vocabulary and reading skills.  The vocabulary words can be found below.

                       Vocabulary:

1.  gear - equipment needed for some purpose

2.  parka - a jacket with a hood

3.  splendid - magnificent or grand

4.  twitch - to move with a quick jerk

5.  willow - a tree with tough slender branches

6.  yanked - pulled or jerked

Spelling:  We will be focusing on base words with endings (-ed, -ing, -er, -est) this week.  Spelling homework is a worksheet that will be sent home on Monday.  Our test on Friday will be a list test.  Please have your child practice writing his/her spelling words NEATLY throughout the week.

using, getting, easiest, swimming, heavier, greatest, pleased, emptied, leaving, worried, strangest, freezing, funniest, angrier, shopped, included, occurred, supplying, scarier,

**gear, parka, splendid, twitch, willow, yanked

Math:  We will also practice daily math skills with our Daily Math(DM).  The students will work DM individually, and we will check it together as a class.  We do go over this in class BEFORE they turn it in for me to check.  Students  are supposed to be making corrections BEFORE turning it in to me.  This should be an easy weekly math grade if students are paying attention and taking the time to make corrections. They will receive a grade on Thursday, and we will send it home to review.  We will study rounding to the tens and hundreds.  We will use Topic 2.4 in the textbook, along with other resources to master this skill.  A test on rounding will be given on Friday.  Homework on Topic 2.4 will be given on Thursday.  We will also practice Math skills daily with our Daily Math, and a grade will be given for that on Thursday.

Language: In Language, we practice grammar, mechanics, and other skills through Daily Language (DL).  The students work it independently, and we will check their work together on the board BEFORE they turn it in for a weekly grade.  The DL sheet that we work on this week will be sent home on Thursday to review for test on Friday.  The test will cover the same skills and have the same 8 sentences to correct.

We will learn about compound sentences, run-on sentences, and sentence fragments.  The students will have homework on Tuesday night and a quiz on Friday.

Handwriting: We have already started our lowercase cursive writing this week.  This week we will be trying to "double up" on cursive letters this week to catch up and finish all of the lower case letters.  After Christmas, students will be writing ENTIRELY in cursive. Please have your child practice this as needed. This week we will be learning d, q, g, and o.

Science:  We will receive a letter grade in Science this year. If your child is paying attention, then he/she should make an A/B.   Your child MUST be paying attention to do well on the science quiz/test.  We are using some of our weekly stories and other resources to get science grades for this week.  .

Your child must have a score of 80% or above to get any AR points. Parents can read the AR book to/with your child. Students will move their race car on the track every time they pass an AR test.  There are many rewards along the track before they get to the finish line. AR has already started!! Students will be required to take/pass at least 5 AR test each week!  I will take an AR grade in the grade book.  I can't wait to see who will finish first!!
